My 15 year old daughter has had great success using a 22-250 on deer. She has harvested 3 bucks with one shot kills over the past two years. Curious if anyone else is using the 22-250 on medium game?

Thank you for such a great site!

That's good to hear. my 11 year old daughter is about to take her final on hunter safety and will be hunting in 2017! We need to find something that won't kick her butt she is only 65lbs.

A lot of people think a deer needs to be blown in half with a big caliber but a 250 hole in the heart kills them just as dead. My mom shot several deer with a 22-250. She could cut their throat using her peashooter with open sights.

I have taken multiple mulies with a Savage 22-250 and 60 gr partition. Several bang flops. Wonderful deer cartridge, I use nothing else when rifle hunting.

I hunted for a few years with a guy who shot a 22-250 for blacktails. It seemed to work okay, but I never did see an exit wound. Not that that matters I guess.

I've killed 3 with a .223....but wouldn't recommend it unless a great shot...1 right between the eyes and the other 2 in the middle of the white spot..all within 100 yds..

A .243 seems to be a good kids caliber as well. I'd be leary of shooting larger animals with smaller calibers. We all make a bad shot every once in a while and the smaller the caliber, the worse off that bad shot could end up. Buy a really good recoil pad for a larger caliber...that is a thought. Good luck with your decision.

Cancer doesn't discriminate...don't take your good health for granted because it can be gone in a heartbeat. Please go back and read the last line. This time really understand what it says.

My daughter has taken several animals with a 22 250. It's a great caliber but I got her a 257 weatherby and had a muzzle break put on it. She took a bear with it and then I used it and got a bear. I really like that caliber also. I think shot placement and bullet construction are the key .

Funny thing, I just just shot a mule deer with a 22-250 yesterday. My undoubted conclusion is it's absolutely enough gun.
I only used a 50 grain ballistic tip. It worked exactly as one could hope. There wasnt much left of the heart and lungs. It also gave me an entrance and an exit hole.
As with any caliber you just have to know its capabilities. No need to be over gunned, especially for a young hunter. Put more emphasis on good shooting than into the "cannon".

I do think a heavier bullet would be better if you were going to use it as a dedicated deer/antelope rifle though. From what I gather, using a bullet much over 60 grains, the twist rate becomes a factor.

Only legal for muntjac and cwd in England but roe as well in Scotland , these are small deer by the way ..I'd have thought a 243 or even the soft shooting 6.5 x55 a good all round calibre for a starter gun .. how I envy you over there were kids are encouraged to get into shooting and hunting ..

Rickoshea,
We are very blessed to have our freedoms. Just have to keep the socialist government pupets at bay. All four of my daughters are interested in shooting sports and hunting. God bless the USA!

Became legal in Wyoming couple of years ago and I have had one shot kills. Have to have at least 60 grain bullets.

Hard to Find ammo so I found nosler trophy grade 64 grain.

I have no doubts about it. You hunt with a .223 but I won't even try that but lots of people are using there AR's with luck

It's not my first choice but I've used it on a couple mule deer and a couple antelope....and a million rabbits, chucks and prairie dogs and coyotes.
It's hard to argue with success.

She has been using Hornady 55gr SP on top of Varget with LR primers. So far so good. But have never taken a deer at over 70 yards or so. Not sure how well the little caliber will perform at distance.

Have a friend that uses that gun for whitetail every year. Hasn't lost one that I can remember. He shot a big Minnesota buck last year that took 3 people to load in a pickup. He uses the 60 gr nosler partition and it does the job

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

I shot a heavy bodied mule deer in Montana this year at 240 yds with a .223 and a 50 Gr Hornady GMX. Both lungs, exit hole, walked about 10 feet and fell over dead. Solid copper bullets changed the rules.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-11-16 AT 08:36PM (MST)[p]I got a 22-250 for my 14th birthday and killed several whitetail and mulies with it. I still have that rifle and my wife shot her first deer with it. Dropped dead at 290 yards. It will do the job but shot placement is key.

As it is no matter the caliber.

I have shot several deer with a .223 with both 55 grain and 64 grain bullets, all one shot kills.

I recently picked up an AR in 7.62x39, most bullets are 123 grain, very little recoil but have not shot a deer with it yet.

The 22-250 is very capable on deer and antelope sized game. Take a look at the 64 gr. Nosler BSB. That is a super tough bullet that will dispatch any deer it hits at moderate distances.

Hey Horny look in to the 6.5's they are a dream to shoot and accurate as hell. With a break they kick less than 22-250. I've got a 6.5x47 and a 260. Both would be great for kids. If you don't reload look at the Creedmoore.

Lot of good advice thanks guys. She passed her tests with flying colors! being 11 years old and by far the youngest in the class she scored 2nd highest out of 16 with a 96%. I can't wait for next fall!
