Here's a picture of a buck I shot in NM Unit 34 on November 12, 2004 AS HE LAY. He's not a monster, but I thought it was pretty interesting the way he landed.
Here's the story:
It was opening day of the extremely long 3 day season. My brother (sandhillhunter) and I drove in as far as we could to the end of a road, and hiked about a mile further in to the top of a ridge. He sat on one side of a saddle glassing one ridge, while I sat on the other glassing a small bowl. About 30 minutes after light, I spotted this buck across the bowl facing straight away from me. I ranged him at 276 yards with the laser range finder. I had a snipe pod on my gun, but I could not get quite steady enough with it, so I laid my rifle over my pack and got prone. The deer finally turned broadside and began walking downhill. I made the worst sounding grunt sound you can imagine with my mouth to get him to stop walking, but he didn't hear it. I did it again a little louder, and he stopped to look at me. Boom. 300 win mag, 180 grain partition through the heart. He ran about 15 yards, rolled over on his back, and his legs flopped back to the ground. I guess his antlers got stuck in the dirt when he rolled on his back.
Little did I know, at the time of my shot my brother was glassing two bucks from about 400 yards away - one about the size of this one and another quite a bit bigger. They got nervous after the shot and left for Idaho, never to be seen again.
Anyway, I haven't seen many "as he lay" pictures on here lately, so I thought I'd post this one. Anyone else ever seen a deer land like this?
