LAST EDITED ON Mar-14-19 AT 07:34PM (MST)[p]Well if you look at draw odds people really like to hunt X5b, X5a, X2, M3, M9, A14, A27, G3, G6, G37, G38 and G39; and I have seen some really big deer come out of those units, so if you have maximum points and put in for one of those tags go ahead. But honestly, there are trophy mule deer in X-Zone across the state, and some zones are way more overlooked than the rest, just because one huge deer was killed out a certain unit like two years ago. I have heard of people having really good hunts in X5b and also really bad hunts in X5b. But its the same way for zones that are more overlooked like X1, X4, X3b and X3a. Now in no way are these hunts a "cake walk", I live in X4 and that is where I have seen the biggest mule deer I have ever seen on the hoof in California. But if you draw one of those tags and expect to have an enjoyable hunt, you're going to get really discouraged. But if you can put in the time and scout, and find where the deer are, you can kill a trophy mule deer in any X-Zone in the state. My definition of a trophy deer is anything bigger than 160" or over like 28" wide. If I had the option to hunt any unit in the state I would probably go over to X3b or X3a and hunt those high desert mountains back there, I think that there is some big bucks over there, by seeing the deer that were killed back in the day around Alturas when the deer would migrate off those mountains. The genetics of those monsters are still there.
