Hotel/Motel for Caldera hunt?

Hey guys, with the gas prices the way they are I have opted to fly in and find a place rather than drive and camp. Can any of you guys offer up an option on where to stay in either Jemez Springs or Los Alomos? You New Mexico guys have been great with all of the help in the past, thank you.

These are the two closest (both are about 30 minutes from the Valle) that are nice enough but not too nice:

I've stayed at both several times. Personally, I like the Holiday Inn just slightly better, but that's partly because I get airline miles for frequent stays. You might also consider the Cities of Gold Casino about 20 miles further off the hill for a little less money.

It's been my experience that both the Los Alamos hotels above can book full up to a month in advance, so if you're interested in one of those, I'd be checking availability now.

Finally, there's the La Cueva Lodge about 20 minutes the other direction that also might be worth checking out:

I've never stayed there, but it might be just what you're looking for as "hunting camp".

If none of these pan out, I've also stayed at one Los Alamos B&B that is kind of upscale, but might also be worth checking out.

My wife and I stayed at the La Cueva lodge when she had the tag last year. It was real nice. The owners name was Suzanne and was very helpful. There is a decent place to eat next door if you get back early enough in the evening. She even asked to put a pic of my wifes bull on her advertising.

My son drew the Caldera last year. We stayed at the Best Western Hilltop in Los Alamos. There rates were best that I found.. Quality was OK! Might not be as upscale as some of the others but we were only there from 10:00Pm to 4:00 AM. Thirty minutes to the Caldera gate.

I have stayed in the La Cueva twice and it works good for lodging, a little rustic and the only issue is dinner if you get back late the restaruant will be closed but the rooms have fridge and micro and you can get the restaraunt to leave your dinner at the office for you. Make sure you look into the cost of flying your meat and horns back with you as that and the cost of your rental truck will add up along with the worry of cancelled flights and lost guns or bows and gear its defenitely something to consider. nwhunter

Just to add on the La Cueva lodge I believe is the closest to the gate as well. Downside is there is no cell phone coverage there I believe.

I believe you're right on both counts NMPaul. I didn't even think of the Lodge until I posted info about what's available in Los Alamos, but I think La Cueva probably is five or ten minutes closer to the gate. I've also never been able to get cell coverage in La Cueva with either AllTell or Verizon. I usually make that drive every couple of weeks.

La Cueva is closer and if you take NM 126 up to the geo thermal site above town towards fenton lake you can get service plus there's a pull of there with a great view of the valley or the night sky.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-21-08 AT 09:29PM (MST)[p]I was up flyfishing the eastfork on the caldera last week and had some service, I never made a call but I did receive and send a couple of text messages. I have verizon service.
