I left camp last night and the old HoundDawg had yet to trip the trigger. We have seen A LOT of elk. I bet we have seen over 400 head of elk. A lot of bulls still hanging with cows but most of them were the smaller bulls. There were a couple of 320-330 class bulls still bugling and hearding cows. We even heard a couple of them fighting. I could not believe all of the comotion this late in the season. It sounded like we had timed the rut just right.
Opening morning we split up and rode ponies to where we could glass. We saw and heard a ton of bulls but nothing worth clippin the tag on. It was pretty cold but a great day for spotting elk and riding. We did spot a really nice bull in some of the most unforgiving country I've hunted. We watched this bull for over an hour before he bedded in the pines. The elk have been out all day long. They will feed for a bit and then lay down and get up 30 minutes later and feed again. There are quite a few hunters down there including the "management tag" holders. But that's the beauty of ponies. We could get to country that others couldn't drive their atv's to or didn't want to hike to.
Day #2 was an overcast day that looked like it was going to rain all day long but never did. We did a lot of driving and glassing. Again we spotted a lot of elk but no shooters. The biggest bull we saw was a 310-320 class bull with about 20 other bulls and 100 cows. There sure is a lot of spikes running around down there. I bet we saw 30 in one herd.
It finally decided to let loose on us late in the evening and that pretty much ended day 2. We have been eating great. Ed and Sharon have been in camp and it's impossible to loose weight. Dutch oven this and made from scratch that.....holy weight gain batman! I had to leave last night after dinner but will return on Wednesday or sooner if they get one on the ground. I'll keep you posted when I talk to them. As for now here is a parting shot of the kids in camp.
It's always an adventure!!!
