We are very surprised (me and my son) that he drew a Book Cliffs tag. This thread may sound like a broken record from last year when I drew. I drew the tag with 9 points. He was lucky and drew with 5 points.
My report from last year was more or less that we hunted hard, covered 100's of miles. You read that correct, we drove a lot, walked, glassed, and tried about everything we could. I ended up not seeing any bears. I did see a few tracks but that was it. In hind sight, I probably should have hired a guide!
Now, to present. What do you think my odds are this year. I know, that is a pretty tough question. I guess I should re-phrase: If you had the tag, do you think you could get a bear? I am thinking of doing more calling, and spend more time scouting this year. I do know the area better now, but am still a little skeptical.
Now, I will bring up dogs and a guide. I am not against doing this, and I have hunted mountain lions behind dogs and loved. My son is hesitating hiring a guide due to him being a college student this fall. I may break down and hire one for him.
My post is probably too long. In short, do you think he has a chance? I thought of talking him into turning the tag back, but he may never draw again! Average odds would say that he should have drawn when he was about 27-28, not 20!
I received some great advice last year and really enjoyed my time. Although I did not get a bear, the hunt was great. Thanks!
