Likely Tables Period 2

The tables above Likely. Look for the 300’ radio antennae on the west side of 395. Head East on the dirt road across from said antenna.

Plenty of land, plenty of goats. I have been drawn twice and took both of my goats in the general vicinity.

Water may be a problem this year. The north east side of the Warners got good snowpack but it drains that way. I believe the southwest didn’t fare as well.

good luck

Goats are around lots of places and it's a big zone. Read the paperwork from the department, which includes places on where to find goats. They get quite flighty after the first day and will put distance between you and them. Be smart, don't rush, use your glasses. It's a fun hunt--enjoy it!

You got the hard part done (drawing the tag). Give the hunt as much time as possible. There are generally two trains of thought on that unit. Likely Tables and the Devil's Garden. But there are antelope just about anywhere there is sage. Being period 2 don't overlook 'off the beaten path.' as they will be more scattered. Glass and move, glass and move. Work hard and it will come easy. You can hole up in the shade mid day to save energy as that's what the antelope do too.

Any of the roads that will take you on the tables will lead you to goats. Don't be above calling Alturas Ranches and paying a trespass fee either. Good goats on the ranch. But when my grandpa had the tag in 1977 and again in 2017 he killed his in the tablelands. The 77 goat is still number 6 in. California and I personally saw a 18 incher up there in 2017.

I was up there last year. It was bad... very few goats. We saw some but even the biologist didn't know what was going on. Things have dropped off the last couple of years. Send me a PM and I can give you info on what I learned last year.

Wow, I didn't realize success was way down. I drew in 2018 in couldn't tagged out first day, but "held" out until 2nd day. I'm interested in what Bobby7321 saw/heard.

For years we saw antelope everywhere and always put in for that area. Dad finally drew and it was pretty disappointing. We had to work hard to see any. Talked with biologists and wardens and no one could really answer what the deal was. Dad was very sick and had multiple issues and getting him in position was very tough. We could have tagged out a couple of times if he wasn’t so sick. It ended being his last hunt so I’m glad we gave it a try and still had some laughs. I think you can still do ok, just not like it was just a few years back.

From what I seen goose hunting during the late season up there in February and March there ain't any shortage of goats. Maybe they moved back in? Hopefully you guys have a good hunt. It would suck to draw a OIL tag here in California and miss out on tagging out

Glad you were able to hang out with your Pops and enjoyed some laughs.

Huge zone if you are going to check out the Garden too. I drew two years ago and the biologist said there was some strange movement and they didn’t know why or exactly where they were going from winter surveys. It’s a fun hunt that typically takes a long time to draw. Enjoy it.

If you choose to hunt up in the Garden...I’d be happy to help you however I can. Have done that hunt 8 times...Seven with good friends and family...once for myself. True that it isn’t what it once was, but there are still plenty of good goats out there. My take on the current population trend is that it is DIRECTLY related to the explosion of the wild horse herds. The Pronghorn don’t seem to care for their equine competitors...and the horses dominate the landscape up there now...especially the areas around water sources. PM me for more detailed info.

I think highsierra is spot on with the horses. I spend a couple weeks a year on that area and they are taking over all of the water. But the goats are still there. Good luck

Just got back from likely and the goats are gone. Not sure how anyone in period 2 can kill a goat let alone period 1. Unreal they still issued 45 tags for each period. Biologist can’t explain where they went. The ranch only had 3 bucks on it and they all got killed. Pretty sad how that unit is now. Do not wast your points on it for a few years till something changes and the predators are under control. Heard there are a pack of 4 wolves and 22 mt lions were collars on the valley!

Hey this is my antelope from Likely Tables. I don’t post much on here but I do scroll through from time to time abs saw the picture of my goat. Just to let all you guys know, I just picked him up on Monday from the official B&C scorer and he scores 83 6/8” net B&C. My buddy looked him up and he will be #25 all time in California. Very fortunate and excited to take a goat of this caliber

I’m sitting at 17 points I know I will draw one day just not sure how long. Crazy to think I have that many points and years toward an antelope. Did you go guided? Or diy? Do you think first period is better then second ? I have been applying for first every year .

Yeah if you don’t have max points in California you’re sort of screwed. I had max points and got it. Thank god I did because this is my last year of hunting in California but I would’ve anyway continued to apply for antelope in California since I have already invested so many years into applying for a tag.

I went DIY. You don’t need a guide for California antelope but this was a tough year in the Likely Tables unit. Not many antelope spotted where we were hunting so a guide may have helped us spot more since he would know the area better than us but as you can see we did quite well. My buddy also killed a respectable goat.

I always apply for 1st period because I figured the antelope would be less spooky. The second season would have all the hunters from the first season chasing them around. Just my two cents. Good luck on your future hunts

Are you mad points for sheep? And do you plan on continuing to apply ?

I missed a year for some reason. I thought I did it but I must have messed up on the application process. It was back when we used to have to mail in the application. I probably won’t continue to apply. I’ll cross my fingers for a tag in Nevada.
