Yesterday I was driving on the interstate just past Evanston, WY on the Utah side. Out of nowhere a buck ran across the freeway right in front of us. I couldn't believe that it hadn't shed its antlers yet. I turned around on the next exit and came back. When I got back the buck was making his way up the side hill and came to a fence. We had our video camera so I dug it out of the back and started getting some footage. As I watched the buck I was amazed at the size of him. He had 6 on one side and 5 on the other. It's hard to say how wide he was, but I'm confortable saying that he was over 30". He was about 300 yards away when he came to a fence. As I watched him for a few minutes, I could tell he was visibly tired. He attempted to jump the fence and got stuck on the fence. He struggled for a while before getting loose, all the while I'm filming. After the entire ordeal was over, we drove down the interstate about a mile and saw 4 trucks offside the road with snowmobile trailers. Its possible that these guys had been sledding and spooked this deer, and its also possible that they had been chasing him hoping he would drop his antlers. I'm not sure, but it was a reminder to me that these deer are very fragile right now and hopefully this serves as a reminder to keep our distance while the deer are trying to recover from a hard winter.
I wish I knew how to post footage, because he's a buck I think everyone would enjoy.
