After many fun times to the shooting ranges,my lovely wife decided that she wanted to go deer hunting and see if she could shoot a deer. So we used some Wyoming deer points of mine and drew a tag together. I knew that she could shoot the 300 WSM great and just had to find her a deer.
On opening day we put on a few miles of hard hiking around some rugged rocks and she passed up a few 2 points. The 4 points we saw were on land that we could not hunt. Day two found us scouring the area with bino's and spotting scope. We found a group of three deer up high in a saddle and the largest was this 3 point. She decided after two days of hunting and seeing what was available, it was time. We hiked up the large mountain and found the deer in a draw over from where we first saw them. She set her rifle up on a side hill in the rocks and fired at the first deer she saw...a 2 point. Buck fever and the shot went over the back of the moving deer! Setting back up and waiting a bit, this 3 point came into view and she put the first shot right through the vitals at 220 yards. The 180 grain silvertip went through both sides and the buck rolled down the hill about 10 yards and landed on its stomach looking right at her. Before I could say anything she already had loaded another shot and put it right through the bucks neck! It was now clebration time!!!
Here is what she learned on her first hunt:
1. It is alot harder than you think to get your gun ready on the different types of terrain.
2. You have to do alot of hiking.
3. Cant show your excitement on the stalks or the deer will hear you.
4. You have to hurray or you wont get them......they run!!!
5. You do not need blush on your face.....the dust does just fine!!!!
What a great trip with someone you love. Many more in the future!!!
