LAST EDITED ON Jul-25-04 AT 11:09AM (MST)[p]We drew the late 2B hunt last year, and here are my impressions. The weather was down right warm,in the 50's. We talked to the forest ranger and he said that we were a good 2-3 weeks away from the rut even though we were hunting the late hunt. We hunted in the Carson, and there were lots, and lots of hunters, which was quite dissappointing considering that this is a quality, low draw hunt." The weather was dry up until half way thru the hunt so chains were not nesseccary. Most of the gas roads will be locked , so be prepared to either walk or horseback in. One great alternative would be to bring a mountain bike if you do not have horses. We definitely will include bikes this year. The carson is soo vast that given the closed roads, if you do not have horses or bikes you will really be limiting yourself by just hiking. I'm quite sure that 97 % of all the hunters will not hike more than 2-3 miles away from the open roads. Forget about ATV's because they are motorized so you can only drive them as far as you can drive a truck.Even when we hiked in we encoutered hunters every time. We saw lots of does and very few bucks. Biggest buck we saw was an 8 pointer and we passed him up for we going for "boone or bust." We also hunted the border of the Jicarilla but I think given the warm weather and the premature rut conditions, we never saw anything shootable. We have drawn 2b again this year and will be modifying our plans based on what we learned last year. Keep in mind that 2B is a large unit, so do not restrict yourself to hunting just the Carson. Also, Gas stations are far and few in between so be sure to bring plenty of it , especially if you decide to modify your hunt and drive somewhere else. Email me of you have any more questions.
