This is my first official post, but have been following monster muleys for years. My brother lives in Colorado and has drawn this coveted tag. We have never hunted moose or ever hunted in Utah. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. He plans on hunting with his bow. Thanks in advance for any advice or simple suggestions.

Wow! That seems encouraging. What is the terrain like up there? We are used to wilderness hunting in northern new Mexico. Is the whole unit accessed by roads? Thanks for your input darkcloud!

LAST EDITED ON Jul-10-12 AT 07:30PM (MST)[p]>I just got back from out
>there last weekend. I
>saw more moose then deer
>or elk, and that was
>just from the truck.
Are joking Darkcloud? I have been camping up here for over a week and have been out scouting for elk and deer and have not seen 1 moose! That's not to say that here! But come on don't tell him that there are more moose than elk or deer or make him think that!

Spit that out Son! That ain't no Almond Joy!!!!

Ok. Who to believe? We all know that there are moose in the unit...one of the greatest in Utah? It's hard to hunt an area without prior knowledge, and I was hoping this would be a great start. Maybe someone has pics or stories? I'm not exactly looking for the exact drainage...just some friendly hunter to another hunter info, excitement, or even encouragement. Thanks for the responses.

Are there moose in the unit? Yes
Are therenless than 5 years ago? Yes

How much scouting are you doing?
Got horses?

Download the unit boundary to google earth to get an idea of roads, trails etc.

Congrats to your bro for the tag.

No joke, I was checking trail heads to go to the top of the mountain in search of a mountain goats. I even got up on the mountain late last saturday, around 10:30-11:00 a.m. and was up there until 5:00. I saw moose in meadows and in the middel of the road right in front of me. I don't know if I was just lucky or if the rain storm had them out. The north slope is a big unit, where were you at? I saw 0 elk and a few deer.

I will be back out on the 24th of july looking for my mountain goat I will try to keep you updated on the moose, they dont do me any good other then to shoot with my camera. Anybody got any reports on goats on the north slope?

I did pm that guy. I have had no response. He might want to keep help to residents only? If so, I totally understand.

Biggest questions we are facing is:

1)Is it possible to do it yourself...no horses, pack in, etc.?
2)Should he hire a guide?
3)Should he hire a pack in only?
4)Given it's a month long, what would be the best two weeks to hunt?
5)Is it easier to hunt the bulls in bachelor groups, or when they are rutting with herd?

This is new territory for us. We have hunted elk and mule deer, but moose, never! We just want to make the best of it with the resources we have available. Given this forums reputation, this is one of our first choices, and THANKS!!!!

Do you guys know of any reputable guides in the area that are reasonably priced. Budget is tight, and we would like to make all of this once in a lifetime tag. I sure do appreciate the responses!

It is hard to come into an area blind with such a tag as this one is. Being that we don't live in Utah, scouting will probably not happen. All information is greatly appreciated!

I would check out the areas east of hwy 150(mirror lake highway) such as christmas meadows and such if you're going to hunt that area of the unit. There is always moose in there.

I have a friend that has a tag too. We live a bit closer went up up last week for a look. There is plenty of good areas in the non-wilderness, good camping. Here is a clip of some of the area to keep you excited.

I would be happy to help if time permits, have a few hunts of my own, I will send a PM.

Another clip for fun: http://youtu.be/Enr1TbDasQM

Its the central unit. Up china meadows or up the Henrys fork. Great videos, you have any video of the Henrys or china meadows. Cant wait to get back on the trail and on top of the world.

Thank you everyone for the responses! Hope to see some of you guys out there this fall. I just hope that we can make this tag count for my brother. He deserves it. If any of you guys need help in NM, let me know? Thanks again,

Chad

LAST EDITED ON Jul-12-12 AT 05:56AM (MST)[p]I'm not sure when the season for Moose starts but I'll be up there for all of archery season chasing elk and deer around. I've seen moose up there but haven't seen any that I would consider shooters. I can let you know what I see up there this year. Last year I saw a couple small bulls a couple different times.

No video of these two areas yet. I am going into Henrys fork in about 3 weeks. I will take some pictures and look for goats too. I usually go into red castle every year, one of my favoriate places, lots of goats in there, but those cliffs are extra scarry. Looks like a difficult area to get one down. But I guess you never know where you will find one.
