October Elk Hunts

I am second guessing myself now for not putting in for the four day October Elk hunts in Arizona.
What kind of bulls are people thinking will be killed on these hunts. Will they be better than a late bull tag or is the season to short to realistically kill a great bull?

Thanks, Alan

I for one did put in and did not get drawn for them. I think the residents or guided hunts will have a big advantage. The weather can be more unpredictable in November and all of the presure that elk have of people constantly being in the woods from Aug on.

I do not think they were overlooked many hunters. 3815 applicants put in for the 125 October hunts in 6A, and 6806 put in for the 950 Nov bull hunts.

I am hoping that the bulls will still be screaming during the second estrus. I am hoping for a big bull on a tremendous hunt.

I think some good bulls will come out of these hunts, although every oct hunt except one has a week long high number cow hunt just before it, and in those units the rut will be over real quick when all the guns start going off. I tried for one of the tags, but no luck, my non-res buddy drew, so I will get to go after all.

I'm still looking for stories and pictures so that I will know what I missed. Hope everyone has a great hunt.

I helped my buddy on the unit 8 hunt, ended up taking a smaller 6x6, chased a good bull in a herd of about 50, thought we had him, the lead cow ended up taking the herd the other way, our set up was perfect, passed several small bulls. Anyway, I had never stepped foot in this unit until this summer, took us a couple of days to find them, we didn't want to hunt the timber so we just kept looking in the open stuff. Saw a nice mule deer buck, a nice coues buck, antelope, and a lion. Weather was tough, lots of fog and rain, it was fun.
