Last year I was fortunate enough to draw a limited entry archery elk tag in Utah. After stomping all over the unit last summer scouting, the hunt finally arrived. I hunted almost the entire season and luck was just not on my side. After killing several small trees and some missed shots due to my peep sight being pulled off by the oak brush I finally was able to shoot a very nice bull. I waited an hour even though I immediately found great blood. As luck would again have it unbeknownst to me another young man was less than 100 yards from me. He came across the blood and started chasing the bull. I caught up with him and the end of the blood a half a mile away. After an exhaustive search my bull was nowhere to be found. After years of applying and never having killed a good bull I was needless to say beside myself. I learned ten years? worth of elk hunting from that hunt so I did not end up completely empty handed. I spent many hours in the field with friends and family which is really the point. My uncle has watched me miss more big bulls than anyone ever should.

This spring I attended many of the wildlife fundraisers as I have in the past. I attended the SFW auction in Orem where they auctioned off a CWMU tag to help a boy named Christian who was terminally ill. Many of you in Utah may have seen the Roughin It Outdoors story. http://connect2utah.com/roughin-it-story?nxd_id=146417 I ended up buying the tag and my wife immediately claimed the tag for herself?? She said it was her turn to beat me since her last buck has been a little over shadowed lately.

A short while later my wife decided that she needed a girl?s weekend with a friend in St George so a good friend and I attended the RMEF banquet for the fun of it. It was a great event and I was able to sit with Brent Todd who turns out is a very nice guy. As chance would have it they were auctioning off a LE rifle elk tag for the same unit I had last year. When I sent my wife a text that I had just purchased the rifle permit for the Wasatch unit she replied something like ?Cool, how much?? Now the stage is set for redemption.
