I believe it's more a case of numbers than anything else.
If we could compare the number of hunters who have chased Coues deer in AZ over the years to those who did so in NM and Mexico, it would probably show the AZ total is MANY, MANY times higher than the other two combined.
Mexico hunting isn't cheap, which in itself limits how many guys go down there to hunt. BUT...there are likely as many monster bucks roaming Sonora as there has ever been killed here in AZ. A lot of the Coues habitat there doesn't even get hunted! Here there are few areas that don't get pounded during the three gun seasons and the archery hunts.
This is only a guess, but I would venture the average buck killed in Mexico is well above the average one from AZ and NM. Again, it amounts to the cost. Guys don't head there to fill the freezer or tag a forkie.
Also, I saw on another site that someone just nailed a monster non-typical in mexico that will score somewhere between 150-160. That is a BIG and very impressive Coues deer.
I'm currently working on an article for RM G&F on Marty Hendricksen's archery buck from AZ. It's a dandy that green scored close to 120. -TONY
P.S. -- Did you see the article I did in that Dec. issue on MM's "Browtine," aka Brandon Verde?
