Shooting sticks?

I have never had the need for shooting sticks until a hunt last fall. I was in heavy grass/small brush hunting moose in Alaska. There was nothing to get a good rest on and I ended up making the standing 125 yard shot at the bull as he broke out from some alders. Later, my partner used some shooting sticks to shoot his standing bull at 350 yards. I am going back this spring to hunt brown bear and would like to take some sticks since I will be hunting the same type of country. What should I be looking for in shooting sticks? What are your favorites?
Thanks for your help.

I WAS LIKE YOU A COUPLE YEARS AGO.....THEN I DID NEED A SET OF STICKS. DIAMOND MAKES SOME LIGHT FIBERGLASS STICKS THAT FIT IN YOUR DAY PACK REAL NICE. ABOUT $30 bucks, up and ready in 20 seconds, LAST A LIFETIME, & ROCK SOLID.....I DONT GO HUNTING W/O THEM....FINDING SOMETHING TO SHOOT OFF OF STINKS......YD.

I have a three legged system from BOG Gear. They are great. Interchangeable head for shooting or attaching spotting scope.

Two words

SNIPE POD

I've had multiple different brands and these are by far the best for hunting!! Killed my antelope off these this year at 490 yds!!

Been through a lot of shooting platforms. I take kids hunting a lot and it is critical.

The best is if your not hunting is to carry a tripod with a shooting V.

Been recently using the Bog Pod and it is the best thing out there that I have seen.
I also own the snipe pod, Moss back tripod, stoney point, and a bi pod.

Bog pod is the best of them all.

BOGPOD!!! I am a huge fan of bogpod shooting sticks. I shot an Oryx running about 150 yards away with the camo leged devil. I love them!

Thanks Gentlemen.
It sounds like there are passionate Snipe Pod and Bog Gear owners. Those will be the two I'll likely choose between.
I have read about both on their web sites and they both have some great features. Thanks for all your ideas.

I have a harris bipod on my gun right now, but am going to take it off and sell it and get one of those primos monopod trigger sticks as they look like they could double for a walking staff.
Don't know what I was thinking when I bought that harris bipod.?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-28-10 AT 11:41AM (MST)[p]I Had a harris bipod on my rifle for a couple antelope hunts and never ended up being able to use it, was always shooting prone or off a fence post, so I took it off and sold it.

This last year I took a Primos trigger stick bipod on my Gila elk hunt. I had a few issues with it. Number one it was noisy. I could solve that by covering the whole thing in moleskin, but I think i will just get something different. It also doesn't collapse to that small. This is an issue sticking out of your backpack or getting it on a plane. The bipod is also not that steady in high winds. I shot standing at the range with it and did ok, but my father had the tripod and I much preferred it. The only good thing about it was it made a great hiking staff!

I have seen the snipepod and bog pod and both seem like superior products to the trigger stick.

I purchased the camo bog pod tripod sticks and have been very happy with them. They were great to use for long hours of glassing last spring on a bear hunt in Alaska. This fall while hunting elk here in Utah, I left them in the back of the truck while riding a mule all day. At the end of the day, someone had taken them. I like them enough that I will be buying another set of bog tripod.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-31-11 AT 04:02PM (MST)[p]Went through a few sets cheapo's on my hunt this year and so I just bought a Stoney point tall bipod (I believe they go out to 62"). They are good sticks that my buddy has used for years and have been great. They also come in handy as a rest for your binos while glassing long periods sitting down since they go wide enough to cross over your lap.

I know this may sound harsh; but at 125yds. you should just be able to shoot OFF HAND! Practice it, you will surprise yourself.

I have seen too many times, people miss an animal because they were screwing around with setting up some sticks instead of throwing lead!

With that being said, I carry the Stoney Points: well made, easy to use and most importantly to me very easy to pack. Used them on a song dog last week at 384 yds.

+1 outdoor dude. i lmao when i see these hunting shows shooting 75 yards with a bipod. i havent done it in a whille but i used to keep all my shots on a pie plate at 150 yards offhand noproblem with a sling wrapped around my arm properly

True, but hunting in Utah with a muzzle loader and a 1X scope, they came in a tad usefull for my 165 yard shot. I agree most people with a 3x9 scope and a steady hand should be comfortable enough out to a respectable range. But, longer shots and certain situations make for a tad more ethical shot placment.
