Well I started my hunt off this year catching up on chores at the home front and started my season off about a week and a half late. When I did hunt I found out that I didn't get into shape at all this year. Started my archery season off hunting with a 16 year old kid and we found some really good bucks while bivvy hunting but just couldn't connect on anything. Tried connecting off and on on several good bucks throughout the season and walked a lot of miles.
Learned a few things;
#1. If you don't get into proper physical shape it affects your mental state as well and can really put a damper on your affectiveness as a hunter.
#2. If you do not find big bucks in your area then move on to a new place.
#3. Packing your pack as light as you can really does make a big difference on your body. In the past I've always brought extra this and that in order to be prepared for the inevitable or extra luxuries. Pack smarter and pack only what you need.
#4. As you get older you have to admit to yourself that you cannot keep up with the younger guys. You are a better hunter if you go your owne comfortable pace. If you wear yourself out you may as well take your first day off from hunting and just lay in your tent licking your wounds like a hound dawg.
Every year I learn a few valuable lessons and this year I was no exception. Anybody got any recipes for tag soup? Ha ha. I'm sure it won't be my last time to eat it! Goodluck to the rest of ya! fatrooster.
