THIS HAS GOTTA HURT!!!

Very little and very sketchy information, but how do you shoot a person in the chest when you are out shooting at targets. This is not like a stray bullet while out hunting that hits someone. It would seem like the guy would be charged with negligent manslaughter or worse depending on what a full investigation turns up. Then again, it did happen in Utah!

That 'Being Down Wind as a Spotter' doesn't sound too Safe to me?

Wow no empathy from topgun. A father accidentally kills his son and it's just a moronic Utah thing.. This kinda thing can happen anywhere, A mother is now left with 7 month old twins and a father is left with the burden of accidentally killing his son. I'm sure he wont give it a second thought every time he looks in those kids eyes. Pretty damn insensitive!!
Prayers go out to that family.

Wow, you must be ticked because I didn't agree with your draw conspiracy theory because you sure put a lot of words out there without having any idea what you're talking about! Sure I have empathy for the remaining family members, but didn't make any comment to that effect just like most members haven't when there are so few posts on this thread. How can you say that kind of thing can happen anywhere? I have never heard of anyone being a "down range spotter"! Have you? What in the world does that mean other than both the Father and son were not following proper gun handling practices if the son was out in front of a loaded rifle the Father was shooting? It just seems stupid and now it has affected an entire family and cost two young babies their Father forever! God help that whole family!

No, it's just a moron thing. "Accidents" like this always happen because someone is violating at least 2 of the 4 cardinal gun safety rules. Both father and son were acting like idiots and one of them paid the price for their stupidity. "Downrange spotter", indeed. Well, I hope dad's a crack shot now, his kid just paid a pretty steep price for marksmanship. I can't even call this an accident. It's negligence bordering on criminality.

1. All guns are always loaded.
2. Never point the gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target.
4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

Not sure where you guys are gathering downrange spotter from the article I read says they were standing side by side rotating between shooter and spotter

>Not sure where you guys are

From the article:
"James Shurtz, 27, was reportedly in position downrange acting as a spotter while his father, Glenn Shurtz, was shooting a .30-caliber rifle at targets when the incident happened"

Apparently spending a few bucks for a pair of binos, and this could have been avoided.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-23-16 AT 12:10PM (MST)[p]They changed the wording in the article. It no longer says what Elevenbrovo just quoted. It use to, I'll attest to that.

Ok, just looked again. In Elkasses first link or doesn't mention the down range thing but in his post #3 link it does.

The term "down range spotter" is used in the links Bess posted in #3 and #5.

Did this happen again? I do not understand what these downrange spotters or markers are doing? Being even a foot downrange of the shooter is counter to everything my father and hunter safety instructor ever taught me. Seems counter to common sense as well. What am I missing? My condolences to everyone involved but these incidents seem very avoidable.

Judas Priest, I don't believe it has happened again! I guess bigdogphilj was right when he told me that this kind of thing can happen anywhere. Is it something they're putting in the water in Utah?

In the water? Probably not.
In the beer? Probably so.

These are such needless losses.

We should all re-read the post from 11 Bravo. Valuable safety advice and common sense.

Hit in the stomach and passed through out the side.

Idaho 3%'ers with the booger hook on the bang switch. More details here:

Clearing a weapon does not require a finger on the trigger.

Not particularly impressed with how they're glossing over details or not even admitting fault for what happened.

One of those dumba$$ patriots also accidentally shot a hole in their hotel room while attending Lavoys funeral. Surprised none of those idiots died of friendly fire in Oregon while they were walking around with their fingers on their triggers of their ARs waiting for the man to attack.

Let's quit surmising what happened from the articles. Every damn article where I was privy to what actually happened, the news always has gotten some facts wrong. The best we can do is wish our condolences to those involved and let it be a lesson to never become careless.

Well what I'm trying to say Brian is:

This is 'HURT' that most of us have never seen/endured!

I'm not talking about the Bullet Hurting the Victim!

PRAYERS again for All!
