West Virginia has been trying to establish an elk herd since 2016. Due to CWD there are very few places that you can get elk. Some of the transplanted elk died due to stress from being moved and some have died from brainworm, which is an issue in the East where elk share range with whitetails. So it's been a slow process.
We have about 110 elk now and these additional 40 will help a lot.
These are coming from Land Between the Lakes that is a Federal Recreation Area in Western Kentucky. These are quasi wild elk. They are in a 700 acre enclosure but they have been there for 50 years and originally came from a wild herd in Canada. Also CWD free since they have never had a case of CWD and they don't add elk to it, just remove their surplus.
The other part of this story is that one the DNR employees got shot with a tranquilizer gun. When a human gets shot with a tranquilizer intended for an 800 pound elk that's a bad deal. He was in an ICU with a ventilator but everything I've heard he is recovering.
