You shot a nice buck on a guided hunt. How many from your group shot bucks that were 185 or better?
Region G is steep. It's not for the average hunter who is out of shape. Residents can buy a tag every year. Most hunters can't afford a guided hunt.
I think to be successful, you need to scout, be able to shoot long shots 400-500 yards. Be able to pack and hike well or have horses. Then get lucky. I agree you should be able to find a 170 type buck.
A trophy buck is in the eye of the beholder. I was really happy with my 170 type buck in region G 25 years ago.
Most top LE units should produce a decent chance at a 180 plus buck. I'm not an expert, but from what I have researched and hunted in WY. There are no LE deer hunts that would give a non guided hunter a good chance at getting a shot at a buck over 180. Region G included.
There are some hard core hunters like Founder that see them every year. Not most hunters However.
There are LE units in CO, ID, UT,NV, that would give you a good chance of seeing 180 class bucks. There are some great genetics and hogs that come out of Wy, but not many in LE units.
