Hunted hard this year. I had a Utah CWMU deer tag that didn't go as planned, a LE Utah elk tag that didn't go as planned as well. Hunted 9 days in Wyoming with a bow for a bull moose, well that didn't go as planned as well. A total of 28 days of hunting since September 4th.
Finally had a chance at redemption last week. Left my house in Boise for Jackson Hole. My Cousin Iris lives there, got to bed at her house at 12:30 AM. Got up at 4:30 AM, drove another 2.5 hours to hunt area. She had an elk tag, we were the only vehicle tracks around. She spotted a bull elk above a cow and calf Moose. That didn't work out, so we headed to a meadow/park we had seen some moose in before. We immediately found a bull. After Mr. toads wild ride to get around to the other side of the park, and a 20 minute jog, the bull was close to tree line, I figured it was now or never. I missed a couple of shots do to an err in the range.
We headed to tree line to see if the bull had been hit, as he acted strange. Upon close examination, there was no blood, but we decided to follow track. My Cousin Iris said "did you hear that"? Ears still ringing, I said "no". A couple seconds later, I heard a stick break, then we both heard grunting. I said "he's coming straight to us! He thinks we are another bull". Sure enough he was walking, head swaying, and grunting right to us. At 30 yards Iris is saying "shoot him". I said "I don't have a shot, and he'll keep coming". At 10 yards I blasted 3 quick rounds, after a couple of spins, he dropped and it was over. He is about 43"! We had to be very diligent as there were lots of grizzlies in the area. I was sure glad Iris was with me.
