Unit 17 New Mexico??

I was looking for bears in the southern portion last year and saw alot of does near Jose's cabin. Don't know how much help, but pretty cool country anyhow. Good luck!

Garcia canyon and 6 mile canyon are good places. Look on a map and you will find them in the north western portion of this unit. The country is rugged but there are deer there. This is a pretty darn good unit. Get as high as you can before sunrise and glass. I guarantee you will see deer if you do this. 6 mile canyon has some nice ridges which allow you to glass a long ways. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Get away from the road up high. Look toward the San Mateo Mountains. Try the southern wilderness in the mountain range. Good possibilities for filling your tag.

Thanks guys for the info. Like I had mentioned this isn't my tag but a good buddies. He is a hard hunter and very appreciative of the information. Thanks again, Stan

I have a tag for the second hunt that starts on the 12th. If a guy holds back for a good buck... what is the potential for this area? 170-180 or is there a chance at a 190+. Will the deer move off the top by the 12th? Thanks

It has been awfully warm and the long term forcast does not look much better as far as colder/wet weather goes.

There was a good deal of mositure most of the spring and summer so there is food all over (high and low) so I don't think they will "move down" unless by some miracle it snows 12" by the time your hunt starts. That being said, there are deer down low in the plains and up high in the timber at any given time. The deer numbers in this unit are pretty good but 180+ deer will be very tough to come by. I would say 165/170 (26"-28" wide) deer are more realistic.
Good Luck. Let us know how you do.
