Wyoming Muleys - Region C

Hello fellow deer fanatics. I am an upper midwest white tail hunter who will be going out to Wyoming after Mule Deer this fall for the first time. My buddy and I have a Region C permit and are trying to figure out when and where to go. We are looking to hunt state/BLM land. We don't need to get huge bucks to have a good time. We will be traveling with a pick up truck camper so will be very mobile.

Right now I am thinking that we will come for the second week of October and hit the tail end of the early Area seasons to avoid the crowds. I thought, since we are coming from the east, we would check out areas 18 then 17 then 23. I have the BLM maps ordered for these areas.

Any advise will be greatly appreciated. If any of you are going to be out there during this time, let me know and maybe we could get together for a cool one.

Thanks.

Sounds like you've got a plan in gear. How long is your hunt? Reason I ask--consider the third week--gives you the eastern half of the Bighorns also. Lotta territory to roam around in. Done some walkabouts in 18 & 19 so far, but not enuf--never enough! Lemme know when your maps come in. Might be able to point a thing or two out so you're not messin' with maps when you could be messin' with Muleys! --Mike

Thanks Mike, we plan to leave on a Friday/Saturday and return the next Saturday, which should leave us five days or so to hunt. We are not committed to the first half of October and would be able to hunt an October 15 opener.

I had thought about area 25 but spoke with some folks that lead me to believe that even though there was alot of land available, there weren't alot of deer? Was also told that an early winter will push the deer to the west out of area 25. I am not against hard work with some elevation, but I got a little nervous with the idea of walking mountains for five straight days and not seeing anything.

Good point, Vic. One's got to play maybe too many factors up in that neighbourhood. I'm way partial to the southern end--its been good to me upon occasion for deer and elk. On to the positive. There's some chunks of public in 17 and 18 that a guy won't wish to miss and access is not an issue. North of town here (Gillette) is my favorite place to watch bucks during this time of year. Never hunted 23, though. I can list out in a private what little I know and what I've seen if you want, according to map coords. Oh, I've lived here since '94--not long enough to be any exspurt, just long enough to start learning from all those hunting mistakes, I hope! I'm not real good on the computer--bear with.

my buddy and i will be hunting in 23, east of sheridan. we have a access to a small ranch that butts up next to a good size piece of public land which is ladn locked pretty much. we hunted it back in 2004 and saw lots of deer.

Sounds like you've got one of them coveted keys to the door of deer. May the last 15 minutes of shootin' light be your finest!

Hey Mike -
The maps are here. I have just begun to look at them. I may take you up on your offer to point out a few things to me. If you want, you can email your phone number to me at [email protected] and I can call you up.

Thanks.
