Elk Rut so far ... Your Opinion

My observations are the elk rut is nearly identical this year to my observations for the last 35 years. In fact, it seems the rut this year is exactly as we would have predicted.

It also seems like we think the rut is "late" every year. If you write down on a calendar when the phases of the rut take place, then compare them, year after year, I believe you will find it takes place at the same time every year, almost to the exact day.

IMO, for what it's worth.

So your saying on the opener of my muzz hunt it should kick a$$ huh?

My Opinion is Worthless but here goes!

If the Elk were not Pressured by people as hard as they are the RUT would be Full Swing a little earlier & StickFlippers would be Happy!

With warmer late Falls & people pressure everywhere I do believe it makes it a little Tougher!

I can only Imagine How hard the StickFlippers will be SCREAMING after they see how many Big Bulls are gonna be SMACKED by Rifle & Muzz Hunters this year!

I'd say the Big Bulls are gonna get SMACKED as hard this year as any time in History!(I'm not talkin 400" Bulls cuzz we don't have as many as we once had,I'm talkin the Cream of the Crop though!)

Makes for a Good Hunt for the Rifle & Muzz Hunters(This Year!) but I'll bet the damage done will show in the Future!(Next Year!)

StickFlippers in TARDville have alot of "PULL",We'll see what happens,I can't imagine not having a "StickFlipper Up-Rising" after what I've seen so far this year!

For "GOSH" Sakes,We got "TARDS" on this Site that can't handle a Damn,I Mean DANG thing, maybe MM should add a Church/Biblical Forum for the MM'ers that can't handle the Hunting Forums?
Pfffffffffff............!!!

I don't care if they're big or small!
If they throw lead I like em all!

:p

Hornkiller that's the way I am taking it also. Sounds like to me the muzzleloader hunters are going to hit the rut just right!

every area is different. but where i hunt it seems the month of sepetember when the first frost hits the bulls start establishing domiance. the bulls seem to have no intrest in cows. thus when i bowhunt i dont even use my cow call. then about the last week of september the bulls start to round up there cows. now there intrested in the cow calls. then come october the bulls are starting to breed the cows.

but every mountain range can have a different outcome.

The bow hunt was hard. I had a wasatch tag. But i would not trade it for nothing even though i ate tag soup. The bulls would scream early on and then late at night. The last week or so of the hunt things started to heat up a little. I had multiple bulls within 40 yards and 1 bulls at ten just could not get the shot off. On the last day i finally got the bull i wanted to 70 yards and i shot a little low under him. It was not a very good day for me but the hunt over all was great.

As far the rut goes i hope its full swing here in about 5 days. Im headin out with my pa on his book cliffs muzzle tag.

Can't speak for Utah, I assume you are asking about Utah since that is the dominant state on MM, but I hunted the 10th - 13th in Wyoming and it got better every day. Rained on the 11th and really took off on the 12th. This was my first bowhunt, and we had 4 bulls working into our calls at one time in the morning. Got a shot opportunity on a nice 5 point at midmorning, which we screwed up and spent the evening working a nice 6, with a half dozen cows, in the afternoon. Heard lots of activity everyday. Definatly figured out that I need to be more aggresive on bulls. I could get them to come in to about 80 yards but then they would hang up before closing that last 40 yards. My hat is off to the guys that are taking them with archery tackle. This stuff is an order of magnitude harder than rifle. Nothing on the ground yet but more fun than reading a Feleno post so far.

I just spoke to my buddy who was in NM 16B second archey hunt and he said it was more slow than not, had some bugling but just not really heated up.Hopefully it will be great for my dads muzzle loader hunt...

Ok good were not the only ones.

I got a muzzy hunt the 8th of Oct. How do you think the rut will be then? Been out scouting this evening and saw two groups of elk and still dont seem like they are talking much.

Elk Were Screamin First Part Of The Week On The Wasatch, Seemed To Be In Full Swing To Me...

"Great White Buffalo"

My daughter and I had a blast last night..had 6 cows and a six point within 65 yrds bugling, herding and protecting his harem along with a satellite bull that we never got to see...she kept asking.. are you gonna shoot.... are you gonna shoot?? I said not until he gets to 30 yrds..i don't want to make a bad shot...she grinned and said.. good call.. save him for rifle season so I can get him...it was just a blast to see her get all excited..like village idiots we didn't have our camera..

In Utah, it usually starts to heat up the last couple days of the archery hunt. I was in a general unit for the archery hunt and they were definitely not very hot the last two days of the hunt. It was a little hit and miss for me this year.

It should be in full swing now 10 days later and the muzzy guys should have a great hunt.

Bulls were sorta screamin yesterday had a couple close calls and almosts. Had a bear come in close which was scary thought We were gonna have to shoot it and it left. On our way out of the canyon they were screamin.
