Hello to all, this is my first post. All the help will be greatly appreciated. My wife (How would it be) was fortunate enough to draw the Hunting Expo tag this year for the Early Rifle San Juan Elk Hunt. Any help and guidance on where to start scouting, hunting in this area would be great. Its about a 7-8 hour drive for us so every weekend scouting trips are kinda out of the question. We are hoping budget allows us to make at least a couple between now and then and would greatly appreciate the info and help. Hiring a outfitter would be nice but I want to do this hunt DIY as much of it as we can. Once again thanks for your help.

With one post you may not know who to ask so ill tell you. Just ask ShowThemToMe here on MM he was down there last year. He is always glad to give a newbie direction on the Juan. I'm sure he would love to help you out. ;-)

yes sttm is yur man hes all ways willing to help a fellow hunter' and he loves helping new people,,,

I agree. He's the best guy you will ever meet. He will definitely help you out and you will quickly become best friends. Only thing you don't need to do is show up to hunt with him ill prepared. When you meet make sure you bring a couple of quads. He hates driving around in trucks on the well beaten path. He likes to get on the quads and get way back in there right where the elk live. Other than that all you need to do is to take care of his meals and a ice chest full of beers strapped to the back of his quad will make him your best friend.

I AGREE........HE IS A GOOD EGG, AND HE DOES KNOW HIS ELK STUFF..............GREAT TAG.........................YD.

I must concur. He doesn't know chit about computers but he believes in helping new hunters get out there and get their bull.

I don't know what kind of "BULL" you will find, BUT I do know you will have a heck of a hunt that you will be telling your grandkids about. Plus you will be in elk alot. LOL

I drew that tag at the expo for the archery season last year. My brother and I spent 2 weeks down there chasing a lot of big bulls only to miss on the last day but had the time of our life. PM me and I will fill you in on everything we learned about this unit

Beer is one thing Sandalland will have l hope to make it down to help you and your wife. Good luck Mrs. Sandal. Just remember its not the kill its the hunt.
