LAST EDITED ON Aug-01-12 AT 06:49PM (MST)[p]Well, a couple reasons. There were several houses built on the different areas that were marked National Forest on the chip, but people living in them. They were marked with private property signs. My family has a cabin which borders National Forest, and I know from personal experience they don't take it well if you build a portion of a deck on their land. Even, though it was their screw up from 35 years ago. So, I'm just guessing they are not going to let houses being built on NF by people who don't really own the land.
In a different part of the unit, there was a big gate across the road that was locked with a big private property sign. At that time, it was the only portion of all the units I was hunting which I didn't have a BLM map for. So, I went to the National Forest Office and asked them about the area, and they confirmed it was private. It was a previous mine and the private property was in a weird shaped strips. I purchased a map for that area, and went back. However, without having a 1:24k map with UTM markings I didn't risk it. Of course, there was a shooter buck right in the questionable area.
When I returned to WY, I attempted contacting the company via phone, but no one answered. So, I contacted them via email to make them aware of it.
Matt Siedel responded and we had a short conversation via email. He forwarded my concerns onto a guy named "Eric" who runs the mapping department. I took the email as Eric was supposed to get back to me. However, no one got back with me. I still have the email.
I think Matt handled it very well, and it was probably just an over site by Eric. IMO, not that big of a deal.
Personally, I think the company is great for hunters, and offer an awesome product. I will continue to do business with them. I just always carry a BLM map to double check their work. After all, it is a human inputting the data.
I see they have a new way to upgrade their chips from your home computer, and you can view the maps on your computer. I think this will help with scouting.
