I would like to get a few opinions on the late elk hunt in 061,071.
I hope I can hear from a couple of hunters that have hunted this unit the last couple of years. First off, this will be my first elk hunt; I have hunted deer for 30 years, antelope 6 or 7 times, moose one time. Had a great time on every hunt! I'm not much of a trophy hunter so shooting an animal that does not make the books will not ruin my hunt! Plus I will have my 10 and 7 year old there to help.
There where some fires this summer, so will there still be elk there after the fires? I spent 4 days there in September scouting after the fires, I did see 8 bulls, 1 nice 6 and a 6x7 and some other smaller bulls during the archery hunt so I think the elk will still be there.
I would love to get a 300?+ bull, and I have the whole hunt off.
I have heard the locals refer to this unit as a MEAT hunt, But I got a call from
Garth Carter and he said it was great unit?? So I am sure it is in the middle some where?
Do you think a 300? bull is reasonable this year? Where would you hunt? I already know where I will be on the first day. Just like to get a few more ideas.
Thanks, Hunter

I hunted the unit in 2009 had a great hunt. You have a good chance of shooting a 320 bull if you hunt hard. I saw close to 15 bulls in that range . Ended up shooting a 350 bull.I hunted unit 71. I was scouting 5 days prior to the hunt and had 3 bulls picked out. Shot mine on opening day.Saw only 1 other hunter prior to 2 days before opening then it was like the dam broke and there were hunters and helpers everywhere.Good luck
