San Juan Rifle Hunt

Looking for some help for a San Juan Elk Ridge Deer rifle hunt. My dad has some serious heart problems, but was finally able to draw a San Juan deer rifle tag for this year. We have never been down to the San Juan and are looking for any info we can find. I am just trying to make it the best hunt I can since this will likely be his last quality hunt. I have talked to a lot of people who have hunted there during the archery or muzzle loader, but I am really looking for info from people who have rifle hunted down there. If anyone could help out it would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

they have helped a lot of "old" or disabled people. check them out, and will work with your budget. You should see if your dad can get a note from his Dr. to send into the DWR to see if he quailifies to be able to shoot from the road or truck, or possibly get an extension...

Your in for a treat, that mountain is ridiculous! Stay high and drive the dirt roads if he is unable to beat the brush hard. You will see good number of deer from the road. The hardest thing I found on the last hunt there with my buddy was to stay focused on the deer hunting when big bulls were screaming everywhere. We found a lot of deer in pockets just off the dirt roads if he can walk in at all. We ended up killing a 198" buck that was pretty young, seen one typical over 200" and a lot of other good deer. I cant wait for the day that I get to go back on that mountain with a tag in hand.

If you are Road hunting give Peters Point area a try, lots of roads.

smoktems is full of it, there is not the amount of deer he says, but you will see deer off of the roads, just not as exaggerated as smoktems stated, a little misleading, if that were the case we would have all deer hunters on elk ridge killing 198 bucks, if that were the case it would be a premium hunt not a Limited entry.
Peter point is not on the elk ridge unit, that is the general season southeastern tag.
some pointers is south elk ridge around bears ears area seems to kill more of the bigger bucks, I think since they moved the rifle hunt later that a good area to look is winter ranges. black mesa, cedar mesa. Anyway BTO, or Sanjuan Outfitters are good quality guides that know the unit.

go to show that you should read the whole thing, I just saw SJ Rifle hunt and figured it was the gen. season hunt. Elk ridge is awhole another hunt and what hold true on one side of the mountain is true on the other side. But it a fun tag to have and you will like going and spotting deer and you will see alot of deer Just like they said, BUT cantkillathing is right there is a few monster killed each year,But most guys are disappionted in the hunt because they just know from reading articles that there is giant deer behind every small tree.
Good Luck

I have been talking to blanding boy, he has been a lot of help. Just trying to find out anything from everyone! He does not qualify for an extension. You have to be blind, missing limbs, or unable to walk without a crutch.

Brock-

I hope your dad has a great hunt. Good for you for trying to make this special for him. Let's go chase some bucks on the extended hunt with our bows.

I really didn't mean to come off that there were deer under every tree, because there are not. I just wanted to say that mountain is pretty special in my opinion. Between the gorgeous terrian, the high number of elk, ok numbers of deer, bear, etc it made for a great hunt the last time I was there and I simply cant wait to get back.

I bet you might qualify for an extention. By the looks of it, getting on here and asking for someones HONEY HOLE! How dare you. Get out and go scouting yourself you lazy Bugger.
