New Gun!

Well after standing at the counter for an hour trying to decide between calibers I took the plunge and bought a New Browning A-bolt Medallion in .300 Winchester Mag. I plan on hunting elk and mule deer here in Oregon. Do you guys think that this is overkill? My thoughts were I could use a lighter round in the 150-165gr range for deer and then move up from there. I wanted a rifle the I can go after just about anything with including black bear down the road, Should I have went with a 7mm Mag?. Just doing a little second guessing, let me know what you think. The 300 win mag is a great caliber. It is even better if you reload your own ammo. The only thing I dont like about the .300 is the recoil. It holds about 6-10grs of extra powder than both the 7mm mag and the 338 win mag (7mm 160gr RL-19 61.5 grs max VS. 300 180gr RL-19 73grs). Which lets you know about it everytime you pull the trigger. Have you shot the Browning A-bolt rifle befor? If you havn't befor it takes a little getting used to (the shorter throw of the bolt). I prefer a Rem 700 action myself. Hope you enjoy the new gun. I just got myself a .338 Win Mag in a 700BDL that I need to get a scope for. Let everyone know how it shoots when you get it on the paper. Jovan

Thanks for the feedback. I just needed a little reasurance. My other choice was a Remington 700LSS (Laminate stock w/ stainless barrel) in 7mm ultra mag. I went with the .300 Winny for a couple of reasons. First the ammo is a lot cheaper and more reasily availible and second because I am a fan of the more traditional looking rifles (Walnut/Blued). I did like the fact that the Remington is made in the US but the look and feel of the Browning is more to my liking. Thanks again!

Browning and Winchester are owned by the same company now. I have been looking to trade in my 300 win mag BAR for a left handed model 70 or an A-Bolt. I really like the 300 win mag round. It can be loaded as hot or as cool as you want it.
