I may have an opportunity to hunt this unit during the early rifle hunt. I have read all of the past comments and posts regarding this unit but I would welcome any additional information from people who have hunted here in the past or are familiar with the unit. What type of bull could someone take during the early rifle hunt if he worked hard scouting and hunted hard for the entire hunt? How are the elk numbers generally? Is the unit generally open to hunt or do the elk hang up on private property? Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. If you prefer to email me or pm me that that is fine also. Thanks in advance for all of your comments and suggestions.

Tooele-

What size bull could a guy expect during the early rifle hunt if he scouts and hunts hard?

Thanks.

My friend spends alot of time with the bulls there, with alittle luck a 340ish would be doable. They have bad thirds (not all)that stops them from 350+.we are helping someone this year with a early rifle tag in that unit.coues52

I wouldn't expect to see a lot over 350. True, occasionally something pretty good over the 350 range is shot. But typically year in and year out the elk don't seem to have the genetics to get much over that? Who knows why you would think they were the same elk as the rest of Utah, they have a lot of water and alot of feed, but genetically they generally don't get much over the 350 mark if that.

Where do you plan on hunting?

There are the occasional 380 bull on this unit, but with 100% success rates for all weapon choices the last few years, it's hard to get bulls old enough to get that big. While I buy the genetics stance, I believe age is atleast as big of a factor on this unit, as well as minerals in the vegetation. If you see a bull with solid thirds, you have found a rare bull on this unit.
