With all the Calibashing that goes on with a few guys here, I thought I'd post a photo that was sent to me of a California muley that was taken this season.
I don't know the hunter, but Damn, what a beaut!

WOW, what a TOAD! We're going to need more info on this one. I've never seen a buck like that here in CA. Congrats to the lucky hunter.
MIKE

Harry,

I officially scored it. 6-7/8" bases are HUGE !!!! 215-3/8 net after I got the math right.

JB

WOW, that buck is a pig! Gobs of mass and a little trash. Congrats to the hunter.

BOHNTR )))---------->

That is a giant, and I mean GIANT buck. It seriously has it all.
Details and more pics please!
Son of the south

Great pictures thanks. I've never really understood why so many people on this site trash California. I love the North and most of the South outside of L.A.. My guess is its probably the same reason a lot of guys on this site trash anybody and name call people that doesn't think politically like them. 1. Ignorance. 2. combative nature (very easy to have on the internet, where no consequesces to tough talk and name calling.)3. Some people just suck. Thanks again for the great pictures.

What a Monster for sure. Anyone notice in the background right middle the SNOW CAP MOUNTAIN, is it Lassen or maybe Shasta I don't know just an idea. What's the highest peak in the Sierras?

Brian

Brian,

Maybe one of the x9's or x10 -3 ??

JB

I've never seen Whitney, but that could be either Shasta or Lassen. Regardless, that is classic eastern California country in that photo. There've been some awesome California bucks taken this year and last, including the others pictured here, and the 200" buck I posted on another thread under mule deer that was shot last weekend.

I live in Siskiyou county and i see Mt.Shasta daily. Now i aint positive but i would have to guess this pic is from North east ca. not the sierras. Maybe Big Valley, Canby, Bieber, Alturas,
or something like that. Just a guess. That sure looks like Mt. Shasta in the background

sisqhunter,

I'm starting to think you are right. Those Sierra G zones aren't open yet and I wouldn't expect to see a buck like that except from g39 or g3. We'll never know.

JB

HH, who is that dude in that pic holding my buck??

Seriously, that is the muley I dream of.. Mass, width, a couple of NT points... basically everything you would ever want out of a muley.. Congrats to whoever was lucky enough to take that deer!

From what I know, that first buck was killed 90 miles East of Redding.
I got the pics from bowguy here on MM.
Definitely a toad!

Leave it to some darn California hunter! I bet he didn't close the gate behind him though! LOL.

SUPER BUCK! ABSOLUTE GAGGER!

Northeastern California. I am pretty sure X-1.
You will have to waite for the story for in depth details.
Yes that is Mount Shasta.
They do come like that once in while..

WOW!!! Looks to be a TRUE GIANT!!! Looks like private land? I have seen some Giants in that area at night while passing through!!! Good Luck

Adin Supply....
Well Adin is in X3a. Doesn't mean he shot it in that zone but I bet he wasn't to far from there. I saw some monster bucks come out of X3a back in the late 70's. You would of bet they were shot in CO. or some where else, Toads! I am sure there are some gagger bucks still in the area, just one less now.
MIKE

Must be the same or close proximity to where Artie McGram got his big bad NT Muley back in 1987 that is #14 in ALL TIME B&C Record Book.

Brian

Artie killed that buck in D2b. I remember seeing the mount of Arties buck in BJ'S restaurant in Burney years ago. My little brother was mesmerized and still talks about seeing the mount to this day.
I've seen 1 very good buck in that area along the Pacific Crest Trail. D2b or what ever it is called now is to far west. Unless the first pic was taken after this buck was transported somewhere else and I'm pretty sure we won't see any field pics until this buck makes the mags.
From the first pic I might guess somewhere near the Madeline plains area.
MIKE

I hunted Adin a number of years ago.
Winterkill had decimated the deer population.
It was damn hard to find a deer, let alone a good buck.
Prior to that, yes I know of good bucks from there.
HH

I hunted there last year and the deer seem to be coming back. Lots of young bucks with some promise and very little hunting pressure. Shot a heavy horned 23" 3 point myself.
MIKE

definite monster....maybe time to start putting in for the nor eastern units instead of going out of state...chris

looks like Mt Lasen, but if it's shasta then it's X-1 if lasen then anywhere between X-5b to X-2

I know some places like that in C1 also. from the looks of that pic it was private property . Cant anyone get any info of at least the actual zone???

That is Mt Shasta. It was killed in X1. The Pit River is X1's east boundery till the Lookout cut off road to Tulelake. The pic is taken in Big Valley. That's the old Big Valley sawmill in the foreground. Is that enough info?

Longun should know he was born up there and family around that whole country. Mikey even has one of the t-shirts like that hunter is wearing from Adin.

Brian

I am suprised nobody has zoomed in on the tag and found out the unit!
Or somebody has and isnt talking...
Is California the next mulie hotspot?
Awesome buck!!!

all you would be able to know if it was an X-zone tag, all the X-zone tags are one color and all the B-zones area a different color ect: not specific such as X-1 or X-2

to quote HH :
I don't know the hunter, but Damn, what a beaut!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW.........
RM

that is a monster X1 buck, by far the biggest I have ever seen lived in the zone for twenty five years. great job most of that zone is public property and fairly easy to draw every other year. Maybe Prather ranch?? Hopefully public what a phenomenal deer!!!!

should take a day and hike into the refuge.....
there are much bigger bucks around!!
shhhhhhhhhhhhh!
rm

Bigger than that?? cmon Rackmaster. Ive hunted the Klamath refuges for 25 years. Don't think it's Prather Ranch. It's further north east from Mt. Shasta than Prather Ranch. Gotta be Big Valley, Fall river valley, Canby, Bieber or somethin like that.

>all california tags are the same
>color

wrong!... the last time i remeber the C-zone was yellow and the B-zones were greene

wasn't this buck taken in one of the G-zone hunts..?

This is the most beautiful California Buck I have seen in awhile. A friend of mine saw this buck in an eight buck batchelor group prior to the opening of deer season. He claims one the the other bucks was about the same size.
I would like to know where the lucky hunter lives, he is to be congratulated!

Very splendid photos,
Watch out all you kalifornians, cause Cass is commin to town & word has it he's taking his tool box.

I am pretty sure he was taken on Public ground landlocked by private.
I guess they got another one the same mourning smaller rack bigger body.
I am sure the story will be out soon so all can apply next June.

STIL GOTTA DRAW THOUGH, I TRIED FOR YEARS WITH NO SUCH LUCK...

The Game Warden in the area says the Buck was shot on the Babcock Ranch South of Nubeiber,Ca. in X-1 Zone.
X-1 Zone is pretty much an easy 50/50 chance to draw. (maybe not next year!)
We hunted the X-1 Zone this year and didn't see anything worth shooting. We hunted public land however.
Bucks like that big boy are far and few between in California these days. Friends that hunted X3A and X-2 did'nt do well either. Just a couple of meat bucks. The trophy hunters I know went home empty handed.
TM

Why hasen't the fellow who shot this buck come forward with his success story...seems strange to me!
If I shot a fine animal like that brute, I would want people to know how I got the job done!

nor are they in a hurry to tell where it came from...

the warden.........
jeez!
I had a warden tell me hes seen a few 40"er in Long bell state wildlife refuge too!
they lie! it is a X-1 buck and I seen him and I killed the other one running with it!
believe it or not! and my grandfathers barn was full of racks that came from medicine lake that were nearly as big or very close! true X-1 is easy to draw but historically hunter success is very low...more dinks than 3pts or larger..... I hope everyone with points apply!!!
I am just getting another point this year!
gonna let my CA luck rest a year....
rackmaster

He seemed anxious to have his photo taken in a couple of different locations with the buck all skinned and caped. Mt. Shasta cannot be seen where this fellow claims to have shot this buck.....curious?

Okay,

I'm back. I know exactly where the buck was killed and I ain't tellin you people that info. It was killed in X1. The pics are taken in Adin. The hunters name is Lee Peacock. 30 years ago we killed some nice bucks in the same place where this buck was killed. And if you go thru Adin stop at Adin Supply and let your jaw hit the floor from the nice mounts in there from the X zones.

I have been in the Adin Store many times, there are some nice bucks there, most were taken many years ago. In 2005 I had the opportunity to see the bucks hanging in their meat locker. Not much to be excited about. There was one nice buck from a ranch in X3A.

Was the photo in the field taken in Adin? I know the spot where the other picture was taken on the road. A friend knows the Game Warden that measured this Buck. The buck was apparently validated by the Forest Service. There are so many stories floating around about this buck, I just thought it would be nice if Mr. Peacock himself came forward and told the story of this great buck and how he was taken. In respect for one of the nicest trophy muleys ever taken in California, why not?
The whole thing is about honoring trophies, it is not about the lucky hunter, it's about respect for a very special animal.
That is why Boone & Crockett was founded!

30 years ago, nice big bucks were being killed throughout the X Zones in California, but not much anymore. My friends and I have hunted the X Zones the last couple of years. We passed on many small bucks to help the herd in the future. The herd is improving ever so slightly. This great buck represents the genetics needed to improve our mule deer herd in the area.

TM

Indian Springs.........thats the spot....and the best area in whole zone! We all know now...right?
So now next year it will be loaded and you all can tell the tell!
WRONG!! me?
jack

So now next year it will be loaded and you all can tell the tell!
WRONG!! me?

?????????????????

Well, that is the fourth or fifth location the buck is claimed shot at.....
I don't think the exact location needs to be disclosed, but the Zone would be nice.

Which shall we believe?

Trophy dude I'm not getting your point, about wanting to know exactly where the deer was killed, I've lived and guided in X-1 for 30 years and never seen one that big fat chance there another one in the exact location.

your startin to sound like a whiner?........

I have been hunting X-1 Or at the very least packing a BB gun there since I was 8 years old. I turned 40 on Monday. You do the math. Anyway in that time I have seen 2 bucks taken that are anywhere close to the size of that buck. This one makes three. The ones I saw were bagged near the town of Tennant. The last one was about 15 years ago. So there is no need for anyone to put in for X-1 with the hopes of finding another buck of that caliber. I have been able to draw 4 years in a row and to tell you the truth I want to keep it that way. We are now at 4 genarations of family hunting and camping in the same spot over all that time. I heard that this buck really came from Old Mexico so book your reservations now.

"I've lived and guided in X-1 for 30 years and never seen one that big" Wasn't that your quote?

LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-06 AT 08:58PM (MST)[p]I should have said not score as well, I have seen a few 30" plus bucks just nothing with that kind of mass...

Manny,

I sent you am IM a little bit ago. I want to know more about your guiding services.

TM

LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-06 AT 11:19PM (MST)[p]I heard that deer was killed up labarge creek. On on of the private places just before you get to the forest boundary. Maybe longun can verify........

Ranches along LaBarge Creek.... Now that brings back some great memories of when I moose hunted there a few years ago. You don't suppose that little spike I saw then....? LOL

No offense meant longgun.

You Guys go ahead and keep razzin me. HEHEHE At my age that don't phase me anymore. You guys probably have just as good a chance as drawing a G tag here in Wyoming as an X1 tag there in CA. Here's another secret I've been keeping from you. This is an X zone buck killed in 92. Public ground too!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-30-06 AT 06:46PM (MST)[p]Qoute from H-H With all the Calibashing that goes on with a few guys here, I thought I'd post a photo that was sent to me of a California muley that was taken this season.
I don't know the hunter, but Damn, what a beaut!

Hmmmmmmmmmmm

OK, enough guys have mentioned Adin on this thread that I have to ask how the trophy potential of the general area is. I don't know a thing about the trophy potential in this area, but a relative owns thousands of acres in that area, and I've had several offers to hunt his ranch if I can draw a tag. Is it worth applying for deer in that area? I'm serious, I've never appliedv for that zone or hunted his ranch, but should I be trying to draw there? He's always suggested we apply for pronghorns, as he's got a fair number of them on his land, but what about the deer potential?

Might have to plan a honker hunt later this month to go see the place. I've never been to his ranch. Maybe I've been missing out on a great opportunity.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-06 AT 11:51PM (MST)[p]Depends on what X Zone your Friend's Ranch is located in. This whole thread is about which Zone was that big buck taken in. Some of the X Zones have produced some dandy bucks over the years, but in the most part was quite a few years ago. I have a buddy that knows the X3A Zone better than most anyone. He has hunted that Zone for years before the Draw began and was lucky enough to draw in 2006. He scouted over 15 days at different times before the season opened. He hunted every day of the season hitting all the honey holes and hot spots. He never saw a buck he would shoot. The quality has gone from good to poor. He did see a lot of bucks, but nothing that would classify as a trophy. In 2005 friends and Family had 3 X3A Tags, good knowledgible hunters, have shot B & C bucks in other States recently and they never saw anything bigger than a forked horn (5 in total)in X3A. They use mules, hunt hard and know what they are doing.

Now, there may be some trophy muleys held up on ranches somewhere. If you get permission, go for it! I suspect that was the case with this beautiful Buck we are talking about. But the hunter has been very quiet about how and where this great buck was taken.

I was trying to post another buck pic that was killed in that same area but it didn't work -I know this buck was killed this last season.

Well, I guess we will never hear the hunting story from the man who shot this great buck. I promise if I ever get lucky and shoot a California muley of that quality, I will share my successful hunt with my friends on MM.

TM

I'm wondering how he will rank in California's all time Muley list. I would guess he would be a typical. What a Great Buck!
I hope someday we will hear the REST OF THE STORY!
