Still wondering how the Crawford muzz hunt played out. Aparently no forum people drew it.
Thanks, Jeff

It seems that they cut the # of tags in half,,30 in 2003 down to
13 in 2004,,I wonder how many they have for 2005...

There were 20 tags for the hunt plus two auction tags.
Know of a 22" 4x2 taken, 24" 4x4, 18" 3x3, and a 31" 4x4 taken.
No snow until opening day. Just one storm the first week, but very cold, -23 and -17 two different days. Also saw a camp at the top of the main canyon that had a 27" 4x4, shot on the fourth day. I think the hunt needed more snow, alot of deer just not many bucks in excess of 24". Going to try the Book Cliffs next year. Cabuck

Thanks for the report, that hunt was good when it went till the end of dec. It seems all these states want your money, but they don't want you to harvest a trophy animal. And this is supposed to be a trophy hunt. Kinda like the state I live in Oregon, I have 10 points and Im about ready to draw the best elk tag in the state, but the hunt is in Nov. and it follows a draw spike hunt. Then a general season spike hunt opens on the same day as this trophy hunt (in the same area) Oregon is clueless.
Sorry about the wining
Thanks, Jeff

HH,

Scouted for four days and hunted for five days. Saw 32 6x6 bulls. mostly in the 250" to 280" class. Took mine in some lower country near Broken Wagon Canyon. 320" class 6x6 taken at 490 yrds. with my 30/378. One shot and he went straight down. Quite a pack back to the truck. Heard of a larger bull that was seen during the archery hunt but never located him. Saw a 24" mule deer that was later harvested by a friend along with some smaller bucks. Nothing huge though. Weather was warm, 75 plus. The elk were still bulging when I left. Get drawn and you will kill a 6x6 bull. Most elk had good tops but short thirds. Good Luck Cabuck

Koyote,

You would not be the guy from Oregon who had the tag there last year? If so how did you do? Heard that last year was a little better from the warden. Montoya a.k.a. U.S.O. Outfitters drew the tag this year. Wonder how he did?

Cabuck, Yes Im the guy from Oregon who had the tag last year. I had a good time on the hunt and met some great folks on the mountain. Saw alot of bucks, just not what I was looking for. The hunt was much better when the season went later. I know two people who had the tag back then, and it was awsome. Still a good muzz hunt for average bucks. I just wouldn't expect to see a buck of a lifetime (but mabye). From what I hear the hunt may be coming to a end. Pressure from Wyoming, as far as Montoya goes if he got a good one we'll see it on the Outdoor channel.

Cabuck,
COngrats on the successful hunt! I have been doing a bunch of goose hunting lately & just checked back for your post. Sounds like that 30-378 is a long range animal. Thanks for the hunt report & I hope you are successfull in this years drawings.

Hear any reports from ID MZ hunters??

Thanks,
Steve

I just live over the mountain from this hunt,,watched it for many years back when it had nice bucks,,any more updates
for 2004 before I put in for 2005 deer??????

Remember that the deer you are hunting on the Crawfords come from Wyomings Salt River and Wyoming ranges. There are less than 100 deer on the Crawfords during the summer. The bulk of the deer migrate into Utah down Nugget Canyon from the north so look to Wyomings deer herd health, which hasn't been that good in the last 4 years, if you are going to apply.

Sagecreeper is exactly right. That is why the weather is so important. No snow = very few bucks let alone any trophy deer. Many deer seen this year were also 4x3 or 3x3. Good deer just not great deer. Might be a genetic defect. Also very limited deer habitat. As a result you will see hunters. Some days a few, other days alot, usually on the weekend though. Good Luck to all in the draws!!
