well yesterday i went snomobiling over piss-ant flat towards hardware and seen lots of deer 1 big 4 point around 26 inches wide. verry big guy!!! but i went down the road almost to hardware and non of the fences are droped. which they are supposrt to drop them but nobody will enforce it and loe and behold there was a deer caught in the fence about 100 yards of the road. tried to jump the fence and got caught in the belly. so i walked over there with my sister in law and he started freaking out trying to excape. so i starterd talking to him calmed him down then when i grabed the fence to cut it he held completley still while i cut it the top wire droped him but he was still caught. he tried to get awat but was still caught just as i was going to pick him up and remove the wire from him he got free and ran up the hill away stoped and looked back as if to say thanks! jumped another fence were mom and sisters were waiting for him.. he was last years fawn and had little nubbins on his head. lost verry little blod as was not limping or anything. i was worried about his leg cause every time we would try and get away his legs would get wraped aroung the 2nd stran of wire. i felt good about what i had done but would any of you guys done that? really i tresspased but it was for a good reason. did i do a good thing or should i have left him? i could not stand to see him suffer he would have died soon. if the rancher sees the fence cut he will see why there is good size of deer hair on the fence for him to see what happened. so would you tresspass to save a animal?

You did the right thing in my opinion, letting the animal die in the fence would have been unethical. I don't think the rancher would mind unless he is like that guy in Northern Nevada who wouldn't let the division of wildlife on his land to seperate the two Elk who had locked horns so both animals died.

There are times when what's "right" morally conflict with what is legal on some level. You have to make a call when you are in that spot. When you go with your gut and do the right (but illegal) thing, however, it is best to do it and keep your pie hole shut.
What do I know, though, I'm just a prosecutor.

well i quess i could have left him cause i was tresspassing but i dont have the heart for that. i will hunt them eat them but not let them suffer.... the ranchers are suppost to drop the fences any way so who would get the ticket? both of use.. would you prosecute me if you were in the wrong also??????

You did the right thing. Who knows, you might have just saved the next state record buck.

well when he turned back and looked at me as if to say thanks i told him i would see him next year. the only thing is he is not 1 of the deer that is in the area that i hunt but still made me feel good knowing that he will survive!! u should have been there it was soo cool when he just stayed right there and let me help him. we got some pictures of it my father in law was up on the road taking pictures so i dont know how good they will turn out i would post them but i doont have a scanner to put them on here mabye when i get them i can mail them to someone and they can do it for me!!!

I would have done the same thing. Great job. I would also have tried to fix the fence though. Sometimes, they are so tight it's too difficult.

Kudos. If he hurt his rear leg, he just be the next big "dropper" buck!

You did the right thing. The rancher can mend the fence when he puts it up next spring, no harm done.

I would have done the same thing. Any time you can cut a piece of wire and save a deer you ought to do it.

Were there any cattle or horses that might get out? If so you probably should have tried to fix the fence or made an anonymous call to let someone know. And then make another call if the fence was supposed to be down in the first place.

If this had happened in California, you could have cut the fence, climbed one of the guys trees and lived there the rest of your life. You could write a book, be on TV with Dan Rather, get your picture taken with Sen.Barbra Boxer and be a National hero.:)

I'm not saying you didn't do the "right" thing, or that I wouldn't have, also. All I am saying is that the way most people get themselves into trouble is not the act itself, but talking about it afterward. Just a word to the wise, disregard if you want to.

no there was no horses or cattle on the place. the only tyhing wanting to get out was that deer. i quess i could keep quiet but if i am wrong so is the rancher for not droping the fence...

Been there, done that. The big difference being, it was a low hog fence and I didn't have any cutters with me, so I had to pick up the deer, and untangle one leg. Lucky for me it was a small deer, maybe 60 pounds. It makes you feel good to know you have helped an otherwise helpless animal.

I think you can see here you made the right decision, but you really didn't even need to ask, you knew you were doing the right thing.

What I have often wondered now and even after my experience. How many tree hugging, bunny loving, antis would have gotten out of their nice cozy vehicle to help that poor animal. My opinion is that most would have looked and spouted something about the sorry SOB with the fence and the "fenced animals." Then they would have simply drove away and talked about it for days over tea, or whatever the hell it is that antihunters drink.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-20-05 AT 06:57AM (MST)[p]thanks all i know i did the right thing i just wanted to see how many people would have tresspassed on purpose to save a animals live... i did it 1 other time before this one and i will do it again before i die. i can quarantee that! you are right toddt there were alot of snomobilers going buy before and during the time we were there that could have stoped but did not they were probley the tree huggers/bunny lovers we all hear about...

About ten years ago my dad and i were driving down this road that followed along side a fence line. there was a slight hill and as we topped the hill there is this small four point caught in the fence, no snow or anything, he must have just misjudged the height and got stuck, anyways i took some wire snips and cut the fence, let the deer go and went on my way to find me a good ole' deer. as i turned around to take one last glance at the deer bounding off before i bent over to fix the fence i hear a shot and boom the deer hits the ground. i could not believe it, the deer hadn't been out of the fence for 45 seconds when some dude pulls up and blasts this deer. it was some what of a sad day for me.

good job , always help the critters out when you can , ummm oh mr eelgrass you been to calif ? ummm cuz i live here er there and u hit the old nail right on the head ,,,,, lololololol ,,, :D,,,
