I was looking for people's input on scopes. I bought a 7mm wsm and was considering a 3x10, 4x12, or 6x18. Just curious about pros and cons of them. Thanks - Brian

A high quality 3x9 is all you will ever need. Anything larger only helps the average hunter at the bench. I like Leupolds, but Burris, Weaver and Sightron make great scopes. If you have the funds, Leupold, Swarovski and Zeiss have upper end stuff. mtmuley p.s. There are many others. Head to a good sporting goods store and pick what you like best.

The last two I bought were Leupolds LPS!!
I never happy with ZEISS products bought them thru Cabelas and was able to return them with out a hassle!
Swarovski make the best money can buy!(however they are very costly and made over seas).
LEUPOLD also have an lifetime warrenty(sp?_)

If your rich like bobcatbess by Swarovski!!!

If you are poor like me by Burris!!!!!

If you are poor and divorced by Tasco!!!!

If you frequent multiple hunting banquets you better go iron sight!!

The only bobcat needing a little more cash!!!!!!

I bought a Swarovski 6x18 and wasnt impressed. I dont see many times that the 18x will be used and the scope was very heavy. I switched to Leupold with a premier reticle with multiple crosshairs that takes the guess work out of longer shots.......hope this helps..... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

I like leupold:
light weight, the longest eye relief, no questions warranty, and while not cheap they usually won't make you go out and find a second job to get one. One of my favorites is the VX III 2.5x8, its light, compact, great optics and for me has all the magnification I need, I have 2 of them now.

as far as you can shoot??? i would suggest the weaver grandslam, best buy for the money in my opinion. the open country you will be shooting that gun in, and i know the country you like to hunt, i wouldnt quite rule out the 6-20 power. whats been your closest shot the past few years??? travis

I have Leupolds from 3x9 on up to 6.5x20, love'em all. Unless you hunt in very dense areas where you need really low magnification, I opt for more power than not. Just because your rifle wears a 6.5x20 doesnt mean you are walking around with it set at 20x. I find it very useful once I get on an animal to crank it up (light permitting) to see more detail but usually when out walking around hunting it sits at around 9x.

Out of what you listed, I'd say the 4x12 is a nice scope (one one of those too on my Antelope rifle).

My choice would be a 6x Zeiss if it wasn't so expensive. I think one of the best values on the market is the Zeiss 3x9 in Cabelas for 449.00.

4-16 Swarovski with TDS reticle is my favorite if you want to shoot over 400 yards.

Weaver 3-9x35, Cabelas sells them. I've got 4 weavers in my family and they all work flawlessly.

I hunt with two rifles primarily. I have a 3x9x40 Zeiss Conquest on my .270 and a Leupold VX-III 4.5x14x40 with the B&C Reticle on a .300 Win Mag. I love both of them - I use my .270 the most becuase of the type of hunting I do, but it works great. When I go out to the Western US or Canada I use my .300 exclusively and 300 or 400 yards shots are not common but they are there. I always try to get to 200 yards, but sometimes it isn't possible.

Money aside, I probably lean towards the Zeiss slightly, but it is close. I used to use 3x9 Leupold VX-I Series and there is a big difference early and late with these two scopes. I feel with the Zeiss I get an extra 7 to 10 minutes in the evening and about 10 minutes in the morning on clear days and about 5 minutes on cloudy overcast days compared to the older model Leupolds.

My best deer have been killed between 11:00a - 2:00p or right at dusk - the good optics have helped me.

A guy named Buck Rogers (no kidding) out of Lander, Wyoming makes custom scopes for a very reasonable price. I think he used to make Zeiss scopes. He calls his scopes Vampire scopes and a 6-24x50 mm scope with a mil dot illuminated reticle will run less than $500. I have one Vampire scope and have compared it to my Schmidt & Bender, Zeiss, Swarovski, and Leica scopes, its very comparable and worth every penny! I do not have his number but if you do a white pages internet search using his name and city I', sure you can easily find him.

Good Luck

I have a couple of Leupolds...and some Burris on things from a .220 swift up to a .375 H&H. Never had a problem with either. I can't tell the quality difference although the Burris are a bit more expensive. I suppose the magnification levels might be dictated more by where you hunt. If I were in your position, I would opt for a VXIII or Black Diamond in the above scope lines.

I have a Swarovski 3-10 on my .300 weatherby.
I really like it, but I am considering having the long range multiple reticle installed and I think you can only do that with the Leupolds.
I shot with Leupolds for many years, great durable scopes with great factory support.

Schmidt Bender 3-12x50 Parallax with P3 Reticle
sku: 3-12x50 Parallax P3 Reticle $2199.00 (MSRP:$2299.00 - 4.35% savings..yah right, put a scope on that worth more then my gun...

Harry: for what its worth, you can have the TDS reticle put in your Swarovski but for the 2-300.00 they charge, you can go direct to premier reticle and buy a leupold with full manufacturers warranty with a reticle system in it specifically for your gun and bullet weight. The scope is around 500.00 dialed in for your gun........ Thanks, Allen Taylor......

If money isnt an issue, take a look at the Night Force Scopes. You wont be disappointed. Absolutely awesome scopes!!!
