Quitting the Oregon points game??

Since Oregon is so ridiculous with non res draw opportunities.

I'm curious to know if any non res are quitting or have quit the points game in Oregon?

How many points have you left on the table?

I cashed in my elk points last year and will not put in unless my brother gets a tag and I can get an OTC for spike or deer.

Oregon has devolved and really sticks it to any NR who wants to hunt there. I also have heard horror stories from locals about the blatant disregard for poaching in limited entry zones. I have no proof but the stories seemed plausible.

That being said other states are almost as bad, e.g. NM.

while sitting on 21 pts for deer and elk It wont be long before I just go were I want and when I want and I can get in on the sheep draw every year.I did use about 17 pts on antelope when I was ready to go I had a nice time.Would I start over no ,I used to hunt waterfowl every year and needed the license every year, but I don't go their any more,Am I ready to give up on the sheep draw, not yet .There is a lot of opportunity in oregon for big game you wont find anywhere else, and were you here there is not deer you better not drive to fast at night because there are deer in every inch of oregon.

I think I have 11 or 12 points for elk and deer. I'm staying in it until I draw, but I've accepted the fact that it will probably be a marginal unit.
I wouldn't stay in the draw if I didn't have friends there that I hunt with.

Someone a lot smarter than me pointed out that had I cashed in my elk points 6-7 years ago on sled springs not only would I have hunted it when it was a better unit but I would have hunted it twice!!

So that's what I should have done instead of hoping to catch My Emily wenaha or walla walla. Places
Like sled probably are not going to get better and more likely they will get worse over time.

As far as hunting their sheep you have better odds in other states. But every one has a different tolerance for pain.

I had my times in Oregon over the years. But seems it is not as friendly as it used to be. I've hunted deer in Metolious and Whitehorse late seasons. Hunted Mt Emily and sled springs. I got a west beattes antelope tag and these were all adventures to some degree. So to be fair I had my hunts there.
?

I did exactly what newhunter did. Now it's been a Arizona,New Mexico,Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and my home state California

I have been putting in for Oregon for along time, when I first started there was a lot of quality hunting. It has gone down hill quite a bit , the reason I stayed in was to try and pull one more sheep tag.i have decided to let Oregon go this year and hopefully finish out my hunting in Nevada, Colorado and Idaho. Oh I could not help myself and applied for Montana Sheep and Goat again. Good Luck

I have been putting in for Oregon hunts for the past 30 years. I currently have 12 points on elk and deer and 18 on antelope. The problem with Oregon is they offer very few tags for good hunts. When I had 12 antelope points I should have drawn the unit I put in for but didn't. Then the next year they cut the NR tags from 2 to 1. Now with 18 points I doubt if I will draw this year. Frustrating.

That happened to me with my deer points . One year I thought I was going to draw and didn't. Later found out the hard way that every other year the one NR tag would go to the outfitter pool. I got that tag eventually but I was hot as a pistol when I found out the ODFW method of tag allocation and that's when I decided to burn my pints and get out of the state. ?

Good news on Antelope, they're going to double the non res tag allocation next year I heard.. As a NR, if you're holding out for a top end tag, get out. The decent opportunity tags are still not to hard to draw.

Gonna cash in. I have 12 for elk and antelope. Going for the next hunt i can next year to fill tag. I felt like i pissed away 205 for the limited draw. Oregon sucks.

Ocho?s Back!!!

What was the new rule?

Thanks for clarifying the situation, sitting at 20 points and that would have been an important change.

LAST EDITED ON May-13-19 AT 11:08PM (MST)[p]If I were a NR with a half dozen or more OR points I'd cash them in on a decent hunt and bag it. if I had a dozen or more I'd hang on until I drew a good tag.

OR screws the NR hunter , about all I can do is say I'm sorry . other states have treated me well and I wish my state could reciprocate fairly .

That said for the first time in 30 years I dumped applying in MT for moose, sheep and goat. it's just become insulting, the money is a rip off but the very limited units I can apply in was the final straw. . whoever said greed is good wasn't a NR hunter.

Stay Thirsty My Friends

I put in for over 50 tags a year and never applied to Oregon, WA or CA. Not worth it. I dropped NV this year - but I drew sheep, elk and deer so that was ok.
