thinking of getting the new VORTEX SKYLINE ED 80mm
just wondering if anyone has compared that scope to the
SWAROVSKI STS 80 HD. thanks

I've typed this too many times now, but worth saying again. I looked through both the Swaro and Vortex 80mm's. Neither were the ED or HD model. I spent an hour with them side by side. Optical qualtiy of the vortex was 95% of what the Swaro was, and for $319 there was no question in my mind, bought the Vortex on the spot and couldn't be happier! If you are anywhere near Ogden, Kent's Sports is a dealer and will bend over backwards for their customers. They are the ones who let me take their Swaro and Vortex out for a test drive.

I have compared the two ED and HD The Swarow is a little better It lets a little more light in. But I love my Vortex and wouldnt think of paying $2000 more for a scope that is only a little better, I would go with the Vortex for sure. 10-15% better isnt worth that kind of money in my opinion.

H-Foo speaks the truth, I'd go as far as Vortex is optically 95% of what Swaro is, just can't beat the quality and the price. You won't be disappointed.

Time will tell. We'll see if they have legs. I'll tell you this, The only nit I have with their quality is the lens cap is a little cheesy. And I guess, if it goes all to hell, which I hightly doubt I'll take advantage of their absolutly full, no questions asked, 100% no fault warranty!

One problem with cheaper glass is eye strain after long periods of glassing. Don't know how they compare in that field. I did look through a buddys vortex glasses and was very impressed with the clarity. I'll stick with the Swaro and Leica glass though.

I have the Swaro 80HD and it's by far the best I've ever used. Never used the Vortex, but remember you get what you pay for. A price difference that large usually indicates a difference in quality.

My philosophy, for what its worth is:After you buy something that costs less are you going to always tell yourself "I wish I would have purchased the other product"? Now if you simply could never afford the higher price, then get the best product for the money you can afford.

I'm not arguing the fact that there is a differene in quality, In fact I stated it clearly that the Swarovski is a better scope. The point that you billionairs are missing is that I can get a scope of nearly equal utility for $319 bucks! Let me do the math, since ya'll probably have accountants that do it for you, thats a savings of some $2300!!! I'd have to rationalize too, if I spent that kind of cash. And I'm just tickled pink knowing that I can glass up the same bucks you can, I can see them in crystal clear clarity just like you can, and I can watch and evaluate rack size just like you can. I've got my cake and can eat it too.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-09-07 AT 07:16AM (MST)[p]From Slider: Even the Swarovski Warranty does not cover the lens cap?

They did for me. I sent them an email asking where I could buy one and they just sent one to me for free.

If it makes you feel good thinking you've bought a Swaro substitute, then to each his own. I've got a Leupold GR spotter and felt it was the best out there for the money at the time I bought it. However, I wouldn't trade my EL's for anything...

IdahoBugler. I called Swarovski USA two weeks ago about replacing my caps on my EL 10x42's (which failed) and they told me they are NOT covered under Warranty only the Binoculars? I ordered and PAID for the lens caps from them!!!(About 33 Dollor's) Good Luck

Forkwest see's it the same way I do. I can only find a small difference between the two, but the cost difference is huge and not worth it in my opinion. Personally, I'd go with the vortex and save some money.

For all of you "you get what you pay for" guys, I usually would agree with that philosophy. However, I have used the Vortex products since last March (Razor 10x42, 20-60x80ED, Viper rifle scope) and I have nothing but good to say about them. I used my binos and spotting scope every day for lengthy periods of time without the eye strain. I have put them through the rigors of using them daily. No problems whatsoever. There is the durability question but if they take what I put them through they should last a long time.

As for the Swarovski lens caps....I guess you are going to have to talk a little nicer, they replaced my cap on my spotting scope last year without even a shipping charge.

It's always an adventure!!!

If the Vortex is just as good ads the Swaro, then why the HUGE price difference? There has to be a some reason for that much difference in the price tag.

I kinda look at optics as an investment. Yes, Swaro products cost a bunch but, "done deal" you never have to think about another pair. I have Swaro EL 10X32's and a 65mm spotting scope. I don't think anyone is arguing that you can't beat the quality, but it is a ton of money.

I bought a Vortex spotting scope this year. The eye relief piece, lens caps, and case are very cheap. The case lasted for about 2 days before the zipper busted, but the scope is good so far. Time will tell. If I had the money I would have a Swarovski or Lica, but way too many things are higher on the priority list at this stage in life.

+1 for what isayNUNYA said.

You simply can't put a price on less eye strain.
If it's the money that scares you from buying the best optics out there...there is such a thing as "law away".

I'm a Leica spotting scope guy, Zeiss and Swaro bino's.
The scope and zeiss were bought on lay away, the swaro's were given to me as a tip.

Spend the bucks huntinforlife, i promise you'll never regret it.

The thing about buying Leica, Zeiss, or Swarovski that's real obvious, but a lot of people overlook, is that you only have to buy them once. Sure it might sting a bit, but I can't even begin to tell you how much money I wasted on cheap optics until I finally figured it out, and I know I'm not alone in saying that.

Another thing that has always amazed is the number of guys who don't bat an eye at spending $700.00 on a new rifle and another $600.00 for a scope, yet they'll use whatever binos are on sale at the local Wal-Mart. Honestly think about, what gets used more, your riflescope or your binos? I literally spend hours behind my binos and spotter, and spend maybe thirty seconds at the most looking through my riflescope during a hunt. Sure a good scope is important, but it's my opinion that you can get by with a lot less riflescope than you can binos or a spotter.

The prices of Leica, Zeiss, and Swarovski's continue to go up, which sucks if you're on the buying end, but guys who bought them before the last couple of big price increases could probably get every dime back out them if they had to. If you want an eye opener, take a look at recent Ebay auctions for Zeiss 10x40 ClassiC's. They've been bringing anywhere from $750.00 to $1,100.00 USED! I know it's not the end all, but trying reselling a Vortex binocular or spotter and see what you get....

I guess maybe the best solution is, if you've never looked through one of the top brands, don't, because that's what happened to me a few years ago on a mule deer hunt when I looked through a buddies Swarovski's. The first thing I did when I got home was to call Cabela's and order a Zeiss 10x40 ClassiC. It's too bad Cabela's quit selling them for $699.99, because I'll tell you what, they were a steal at that price!

ditto foreman!!
Those classics are second to none!!
I roll my eye pieces down and it's amazing how much better yet they are!! Sharpest, truest colors in glass on the market....hands down!!

Foreman 4x4 hit it on the head.

I bought some Bushnell lengends cause I wanted to wait to buy my EL's. By the time I waited the EL's were more expensive. So I ended up paying 800 bucks more than I needed to.

I don't disagree with anything that you guys are saying about Swaro's, Leica's and Zeis. They are great optics and when you get to that level of optic it's a matter of personal oppinion. As for the Vortex...ask me next year. If they are still holding up (which I can't imagine they won't) then we'll all know. As for their warranty, it's every bit as good as the big boys. Unconditional means just that. The guy at Vortex said that if I dropped them, ran over them with my truck, etc. they would replace them. No questions. If they stick by that, they must have the product to back it up. I can't imagine paying $1800 to $2000 for the new EL's vs $719 for the Vortex Razers. I may eat my words but so far they are as good as they say they are. Extremely clear and lighter than the Swaro's.

Hey Jim....where ya been hiding??

I hope you have good luck with the warranty on those too if ya ever need it.
I bought my son a pair of those $500 "Bushnell Elite" last year for his b-day. We dropped them and knocked them out of alignment, sent them in for Bushnell's "lifetime warranty".....
They called me back and said- "do to abuse, we can't warranty these but can repair them for $180".

If Vortex said they'd stand behind them under ANY circumstance, that's worth the price right there.

You know how those latex gloves work, Jim....no stink on mine!!

I'm all done as far as the big stuff goes, now it's coyote time!!

Sorry, I should have clarified. Size comparison is with the Viper series. They are pretty much the same size but the Viper's are lighter. The Razer's are actually slightly longer which appears to be the weight difference.
