Looking for a pair of hunting radios that actually work when hunting. What is a good radio?

O--one
B--big
A--ass
M--mistake
A--america

Unless you get an EXPENSIVE business band system, and a license to operate it .....the basic GMRS "family" radios are mostly a waste of time and money.

Midland, Cobra, etc, all tell you they have 20+ miles of range. That's BS.

In a hunting/outdoor situation, the slightest contour deviation will render them USELESS......and leaving you pissed off!

Stand by, there will be a dozen guys come on here and tell you that THEIR radios work fine....

We have sold a hundred different units in the sporting goods store I managed, but finally quit carrying ANY of them, because people depended on them and they failed to perform as advertised.

They are fine in a Mall, keeping in touch with the wife and kids......unless they go into a shop. You know someone who has a set.....borrow them and try them out.

If you have a SERIOUS hunt, you can rent a sat phone and have NO issues or disappointments.

I have used all of the radios out. When your in a deep canyon your not going to get out on a radio no matter what it is. Our big radios we use for work do a little better. But when we are on a repeater they work even better. But you would have to find a repeater in your hunting area and pay the owner to use it.
Our cell phones seem to work in most areas with work or hunting. When in a areas without cell coverage. I use my Rhino . It works great for seeing the other hunters in our party. On the gps screen.
I know of a hunter that got lost and spent the night out in a storm. He was located the next morning on a rhino . He was given direction on which way out to come. They could see he was going the wrong way and told to sit tight. My friends hike in to him and brought him out. They are a little harder to learn then a regular radio. But once you do you can send text back and forth. You can search a person location. It will give you a direction and distance of how far away they are from you. They you have my 2 cents .

JUDAS Nicky!

If I told you how far I've Talked 'SKIP' on a CB You'd Probably call me a LIAR?:D:D:D

I get a kick out of Dozens of Hunters lightin a Canyon up with Dozens of Radio's!

I Shy away from them Crowds!

Bad part is,that I have to move away from most Game Animals to get away from most of the TARDS!

I'll take my chances on an Un-Punched Tag!

I've been looking into HAM radios. I still know very little about them. Takes a easy test to get your license to operate them. the hand held ones that i've been pointed towards are 45$ each and supposedly with the correct setup they'll reach farther then i'll ever need to.

But I've never actually talked to anyone that uses them for hunting purposes, so far I've got my info from 4wheel drive groups and HAM enthusiasts.

Just thought it might be something youre interested in

Nick, I agree with you, to a degree. While most radios don't work nearly as well as advertised, radios did help my son kill his biggest buck to date. A buddy was glassing from a high ridge on the late Kaibab hunt, and we were about 3-4 miles away, checking another area. He found a buck a few miles from either of us and told us where it was. We hightailed it to that area, and even though it took my son about 4-5 hours from when we got that call, he killed a heck of a nice buck, less than 100 yards from where it was when my buddy first spotted it.

Radios are not a 'be all, end all' but they are a useful tool where legal.

NOT!...Been all thru that, but you tell me how SKIP on a CB radio.....totally undependable itself, has anything to do with this thread? And just exactly how are you going to get your "foot warmer" out to a hunting area?

............and WHEN you have someone "on a high ridge"....
"line of sight" is the key here.
What if there are hills and valleys?

They don't work dependably and provide a false sense of security.

That is simply my answer to the original question......my opinion. You may have another, and I have no problem with that.

The front door of our store faces Mt Whitney, 17 miles away. I can see a strobe light being operated from the top of the mountain, but none of the radios we have sent up with climbers, are capable of communication.

That is a straight line with zero obstruction. ........so where do they work for 20+ miles?

Louie T,

Those sound good!

Curious myself if anyone has used them?
