I was lucky enough to draw a sheep tag for the late hunt on utahs Newfoundland Mtns. Never been on the unit and it will be my first sheep hunt. Antone with experience on this unit care to share info? Thanks in advance.

LAST EDITED ON May-17-19 AT 10:46AM (MST)[p]Freaking awesome.
Some amazing country out there.
Take a patch kit and a spare tire or two.
Not likely to find a huge ram but good representative is very doable.
If I had tag and especially late I'd dedicate some time to glassing the few areas that can't be seen from road.
Found this bad boy out there last week.

Congrats on the tag shedhead!! I put in for the same hunt with 18 points but didn't draw. How many points did you have?

Keep us updated on your scouting & the hunt. I am very interested in your overall experience.

No bugs but it was still rather chilly.
Didn't see any sheep on this trip but didn't do any glassing so not overly surprised.
I'll be out there another couple times and hopefully have more time to devote to searching for sheep.

LAST EDITED ON May-17-19 AT 09:40PM (MST)[p]Congrats sheadhead. My first sheep hunt was a mind blower, and I've been inflicted ever since.
You can make your hunt an adventure or you can just go shoot a sheep. If it were my tag, I'd spend as much time as I could getting to know the place and where the sheep hang. I'd also plan as much time as you can afford just enjoying the experience. Sheep hunts are rare indeed.
You won't likely find any monster rams on the Newfys. They skimmed off the cream many years ago, and Cali's just don't get that big anyway. But if you put in there, you probably aren't looking for numbers.
I would suggest you look at as many pictures of Cali rams as you can so you know what a good sheep looks like. It takes a bit of practice to know what's good and what isn't. Age and mass are king when it comes to good sheep. Old Utah Cali's are usually broomed back and heavy so usually rams with lamb tips are young.
That mountain holds lots of sheep so I'd not be in a rush just to shoot one and get out of there. The rut will be on while your there and watching rams but heads is a rush, in and of itself. That's my advice, for what it is worth.

I've not hunted the unit but I will very likely be out there in a few weeks and I'll be glad to pass on any info I get from that trip if you would like.

Good on you man and best of luck.

Is there any chance that thing is live? :-0. Years ago a buddy of mine found an ejection seat down by Congress Az. He carried it home. I'll bet someone is looking for that thing though.

May you live long enough to cash in those preference points. Amen

pretty much park anywhere on the unit and start glassing. if you dont see a ram (which would be unusual) move to the next glassing spot. its pretty much a sheep factory.

How to start an argument online:
1. Express an opinion
2. Wait

So YOU got my tag, huh? LOL

Congrats and y'all have fun out there!
