Have to use 14 deer points this year

Now that I live in WY I have to use my 14 NR deer points this year before I am a resident for 2025. I live in region G and have also thought about 141, but considering what happened to the W WY deer in 2023 and the fact that I will be elk hunting the last 2 weeks of Sept in ID I am not sure what to do. How bad was the winter of 2023 on the deer in Central WY? If it was not a use em or lose em situation I would probably just wait, but I would like to use 14 years worth of points on something. Anyone have any thoughts you want to PM me? Not really looking for anyone to post units specifics in this thread, but open to general thoughts.

I would go 141 for the simple fact you’ll never draw it as a resident. Very beautiful country

Yeah, that is part of my thought. I elk hunted around there a couple years ago and loved the area. Close enough to drive day hunt for me. The dates are good for me also and I really don't care all that much if I shoot something.

That is a tough call. I stopped hunting deer after the 2023 winter. I will resume when the herds rebound. I too live in G. Where are you located?

If you don’t care about shooting something let your points lapse so someone else who wants to hunt gets a tag.

You can still go there without a tag in your pocket since you don’t care if you shoot something.

Not! :)

We are in the same boat as you. We’re moving to Thayne once our house is finished late summer. My wife and I are burning all of our points as well, planning to just hunt G, Gen elk, and central WY antelope. Look me up sometime.

Will do

My son and I have Diamond creek elk tags so at least I can still elk hunt right out the back door this year.

I’ll bite. Some states your points convert the other way. So I guess your NR points don’t convert to resident next year?
Asking for…. myself.

I'd do G if ya have the Idaho DC elk tag.

Go out to Crow Creek or west of Fairview and hunt the border.

I did that for years on the Wyo Gen elk and DC tag.

Plus, you could go a pinch farther North and hunt G/Freedom south and over into 66a of your DC unit options.

Just a thought.

Id look into somewhere besides region G just because you'll be able to hunt G every year after. I'd look into a bunch of different limited areas. G is cool and all but with your points it would be nice to go hunt somewhere you don't have 15 other people sitting on the same ridge you are no matter where you go.

I don't know for sure but I have a sneaky suspicion the outfitters have an angle on these general tags. The whitetail deal seems suspect. Maybe not, but I don't trust them.

I get you SS..These guys are talking when you become a resident you can get a general g tag every year. What I am saying is maybe now but maybe not for long. When they split whitetail they will have to make a quota. Then domino to mule deer? They have the perfect excuse to go limited quota with low winter kill numbers. Maybe not but ?

Got you. If they didn’t go LQ after the record low this year I doubt they ever will
