cow moose

I'm thinking about burning my moose points on a cow tag. I've got 18 weighted points. I'm thinking with wolves & my age (69) I should go while I still can. Which unit ?

As long as you’re feeling healthy, I would keep trying for a bull. With your points a cow tag should be fairly easy as long as you put in for a unit that historically has several cow tags

I’m going to try for a bull for the 20th time but I’m in the same boat and will soon put in for a cow if I fail to draw again. Bob, keep me posted, I’ll come help you carry the darn thing.

I drew last year with 20+ weighted points a bull tag. It was definitely worth the wait. You can help your chances by applying in a unit that has a higher number of bull tags with all your weighted points.

I’m in the same boat. Don’t know anything about the northern units so it feels like throwing a dart blindfolded.

I need to know which unit I can drive my truck to one in. They look big

Yep, spend $300 ($100/year) and in 3 years you have almost the same odds as people that have been applying for years. Least they could do is square or cube an applicant’s points.

I think its a good way to go.
Colorado may change their system, wolves are going to eat the moose (just like every other state with wolves) Go have fun.

I'm looking at unit 6 23 tags---14 kills. Unit 7--21 tags 16 kills. Unit 16--16 tags 11 kills. unit 28 11 tags 10 kills
Bob,
I have hunted unit 6 now 3 times for moose. 2 of my hunts and helped a buddy with his cow. If you draw I would be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

The funny part is nonresident historically have better odds than residents some years depending on the units.

That is a seriously big investment for a nonresident. 2700 plus 100 dollars a point for a cow. And I get it, I've tried to talk one of my friends into burning point for a cow. He's not listening though. A Canada moose isn't that much more on the surface. Travel is more, guide and cook tips...but that's for a bull.

It's a tuff call - probably a better value per pound in CO than going to Canada or Alaska for a cow, and a fraction of the price if you get a bull tag.

Do it while you can and never look back. I always wanted to go on an Alaskan moose until I thought I had the money to go on a great hunt. Once I found out the truer costs and reality of spending $20-40K for a great all around hunt, I couldn't pull the trigger on this - even though I could afford it now, I can't feel right about spending that kinda of money.

More power to those whom do spend the money & know doubt I would have the time of my life but I just can't pull do it.

Funny how ones priority change over time!
