Someone willing to talk about CO

Thought I had things figured. Went to apply my boy and found out I misinterpreted the age requirement. Needing now to change unit and season, limiting his options. Like always, we'll try for a nice buck. However, this is more about his first hunt and hopefully first buck. Would like to discuss a couple thoughts I have with someone in the know to figure out which would be the best route to go.

Thanks

How many points does he have?
0. He's 11 now, but won't turn 12 until later in the year. So that limits which seasons he can apply for. For some reason I had it in my mind that as long as he turned 12 this year it didn't matter what season he applied for.

I'm now looking at units I've never been to. This is purely for opportunity to harvest his first buck. I have a few units in mind, just not sure what to expect with finding deer in public vs private, access, etc.

Ah. Ok. Wasn’t sure if the age requirement you were referring to was losing his youth status or turning 12. Unfortunately, I don’t think I have any useful info on units he would be able to hunt this year. Three of my kids have deer hunted CO as youth, but with a few points.

so last year my son was trying apply for a preference point, at the age of 11 and turn 12 later in fall and that was denied. Just throwing it out there

Hmmm, my other son in the same situation last year didn't have any problem 🤷‍♂️.

I think I'm just going to pick a unit and go for it. Can't imagine any unit not providing an opportunity at a first buck.

If you would have applied for a tag that started after his birthday he would have got a point if he didn't draw it. Did the same thing last year for a 11 year old.

Don't forget to apply him for the Colorado youth outreach program. It is a cool free program that CPW puts on for youth hunters for deer and Cow elk on private ranches. One of my sons got drawn and it was a very memorable experience.

My son went on multiple high quality goose hunts and a great pheasant hunt with shooting lessons. Everyone's kids should take advantage of the program.

That's cool. I really appreciate the opportunity CO gives for youth hunters.

Here is a pic of my oldest boys first buck last year in CO.

Youth have priority in the leftover draw. Almost all those tags go to youth. I would apply him there for sure, you can get some pretty good tags there.
