I'm partial to pointers. I have more dog pics in my phone than I care to admit. Currently run 4 dogs, have hunted wild birds in 16 states give or take. Been a fun time.
I don't post too much so here ya go: Like most folks in the 2000's I thought that going to option 2 (smaller units) and increasing the buck to doe ratio would bring back better hunting. Decreasing tags has got to help right--well maybe not.
It was eye opening to me when I learned that 'back in...
ksl.com and utahgunexchange.com would both be good places to sell on.
You will get more overall by selling piece by piece but that will take time and be a pain. If you sold everything together to one buyer it would be much quicker but you would probably be giving up 25%+ value
Good luck to you
The last two years the success rate on the mid hunt was 53% & 60%. Late hunt is usually high 60's to mid 70's %.
Any elk hunt with a success rate over 50% out west is rare so take this into account. Although folks here look down on the mid hunt if you are a nonresident and look at neighboring...
If sheds were not worth $, none of this would be needed.
Make a law you cannot sell or trade a shed in the state of Utah and Sheds picked up in Utah cannot be transported out of the state.
Problem solved. Folks that enjoy the sheds for what they are and collect them for themselves don't have...
I was walking the hills this weekend and checked in on a big game guzzler I know about. Looks like the snow last year busted it. It’s needs fixin. Since we have some MDF folks here and this guzzler was funded by them I figured I would post it here. It’s in Utah county. Send me a PM if you can...
Hear me out. Pro scope guys be saying that scopes don't matter to success rates then we should probably remove them from the Any Legal Weapon hunts and we will kill just as many deer but save ourselves some money when it comes to buying optics!
Money is tight, think about it guys, you can take...
WB made the right call!
Here ya go fellas, it's a fine sight, you will love it! Had one on my M4 years ago. I'll be running irons

a $15K rig today is a $2K rig in 10 years. Technology keeps on getting better and cheaper.
If the WB refuses to curtail tech like something as little as Muzzy scopes then the Utah Legislature will likely have to reign in the tech. The general public ultimately controls the hunting through the...
If the true General Public (non hunters) knew all of the killing technology that we hunters can take to the field their heads would freakin spin. Remember that it was the Utah Legislature that put restrictions on trail cams. They did it because hunters (wildlife board) would not.
If we...
There are affordable muzzle-loading barrels out there that can be thrown on a TC lower action that can handle smokeless powder pressures and shoot well with BH209. Smokeless powder like H4895 will shoot a 250 grain .45 Cal high BC bullet at 2800 FPS fairly easily. You throw a 4X scope on that...
You're correct that difficulty in policing is a weak argument--I won't use it again.
Open sights are effective and can be lethal at long distances in the right hands, but we are speaking to the averages. The standard issue US infantry sight is a 4X ACOG and the one that will be replacing...
@Bux n Dux
I figure Archery is the toughest weapon and the ALW is the easiest weapon so we should have a medium weapon and my view is open sight muzzleloader fits perfectly in that divide.
I don't think going to 4X makes it that different. The Service rifle competitions at Camp Perry are shot...
This is a couple year old thread and not sure why it's resurrected (should probably stay dead) but the 'we need all the tech so we don't wound deer' is the dumbest argument out there.
Look at states with weapon restrictions, are they wounding more animals than states with no restrictions? No...
Before we go throwing out the baby with the bathwater on this new elk plan let's see how the data lines out when the seasons are over.
What did the success % end up being per season?
What bull age objective was met per each season?
What did the hunter satisfaction scores say?
The one consensus...
@elkantlers
I can argue that! Taking steps back in tech does not automatically mean people are going to push the envelope because they were used to a more efficient weapon system before. You would have to supply some data to back your assertion and I doubt you have any. I think responsible...
You know they allow guys to put razor blades on the end of sticks and using their muscle power placed in a contraption with strings and limbs they launch these razor tipped sticks at large game animals with the idea that they are going to cleanly kill these animals. It's been going on for...
@Bigwiffy Isn't the Utah Bowman's Association still a thing? Or Utah Archery Association? I think they have a website? Archery shoots are a thing and bowhunters get together often for shoots in the spring/summer.
Don't view me as anti Archery, I love shooting my bow, I shoot league all...
I learned on my daughters early GS elk hunt that the elk were pretty much shut down until the archery hunt was over. Knowing what I do now I would have concentrated more on the latter part of the season (last 5 days). We still got it done but we burned a lot of boot leather early that would...
@idahomuleyhunter From your posted research paper below (bolded). I didn't read it all (don't have time right now but I appreciate you posting it). Looks like 14 bucks per 100 does got the job done. I think the Pahvant has at least that buck to doe ratio. Again this is a great paper and I...
Per wildlife biologists, it takes 5 bucks to successfully breed 100 does. Get below that and does don't get bred. I'm confident that the vast majority of in heat does will get bred on the Pahvant this November
I can go off of my experience which is data to a sort
Archery:
My first compound was bought in 1993. Was a used Martin Lynx with an overdraw. Shooting aluminum arrows. I practiced a lot being an early teenager and by the time I was 16 years old I would say I could consistently hit an 8"...
Electronic calls are banned for ungulate and bird hunting so although everybody is bustin Slams balls about this, the DWR (and most states) have put rules in place because E callers do give an unfair advantage so um yeah, you're right and action was taken to limit SOME calls. Nobody wants to...
You kiddin me?! Hunters are competing against each other. If you haven't tried to get to a critter before the other guy then you really haven't has much experience on the Utah general deer hunt! The ability to shoot further gives ya that head start
We all want to dictate how others...
@Ballistic
What range do you think the AVERAGE (common definition) successful ALW rifle shot is on deer & Elk in Utah? What AVERAGE time(s) of day does this shot take place?
I appreciate that you are a bada$$ shot--good for you buddy
If my claim that the current modern muzzleloader is not...
The tech committee seems to be blocking emerging tech from archery and ALW, not walking it back much aside from some special and uncommon electronics. They may have set some definitions for specialty primitive hunts but those are not going to be applied to the entirety of the state.
I don't...
I’m saying it’s more similar now to the any legal weapons hunt. That was the point of me relaying my experience. It’s easy to plug and play just like a regular rifle. Not a lot of try to get pretty amazing results…just like the ALW hunt.
I’m not selling success rates, false narratives, or...
Who gives a crap about success rates—this isn’t about success rates, it’s about the muzzy hunt being different than the any legal weapons hunt. I thought that was made clear?
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills
