    Son's deer from Oct. 18th

James' 'first hunt' was 2 1/2 (although he mostly helped me 'watch' his mom). He went on a true Idaho llama-packin trip when he was 3 1/2 and has been out every since. You're right......about hunting with your kids (Older sisters were also fun...but he is a bit more intense...just like dad :)...

    Muley movement question

The deer will 'move' a little more either just before or just after a storm. Unless they've been 'holed up' for several days (due to said storm), don't expect the difference to be dramatic. Deer are crepuscular, rather than nocturnal, which means their periods of peak activity are in low-light...

    THANK YOU, RELH

Hatfield Knives, made by our own RELH, are everything one would hope. Robert made one for my son, James, for Christmas last year. He was easy to work with and the knife LOOKED great. Yesterday, James got to 'use it for the first time' on a great buck he took. ...... The knife was strong, easy...

    Unit 40

Lance, I'm not an expert on unit 40....but I have some maps. Depending on when you're going out, if you could use an extra set of binos or spotting scope, I'd come help ya' look for 'em. Within the shadows, go quietly.

    Son's deer from Oct. 18th

We HURRIED LIKE CRAZY..... to finish as the first few flakes were falling. Got him down to the trail as it was starting...and rode the 4-wheelers back to camp in a snow storm. ......took the pic, because he looked funny. Within the shadows, go quietly.

    TOPO Maps

I've not had reason to buy a new map for several years. I have that reason now........ except things have changed. I want a good topo map. Anyone want to tell me the best place to buy one..... online so I can define the specific area. Thanks Grant Within the shadows, go quietly.

    Looking for a hunting buddy

Your 'story' and mine sound quite similar..... except I almost always hunt alone. I live in Pocatello but love unit 39, which I hunted with llamas for years. If you're still looking, please send me a PM....who knows? Within the shadows, go quietly.

    Wyoming Hunt Consulting/Scouting Package

I'd say that's a good deal............ and not so much because of the price but because I've seen pics of Brian's success. Truth is, not everyone can 'find 'em'. Within the shadows, go quietly.

    Big Upset

I won 4 pizzas and 2 milk shakes on that little tussle. Rousy has never won on skill. She has won by physically overwhelming her opponent. That's real effective until the opponent is (or very close) to your physical equal ...AND more skilled. Within the shadows, go quietly.

    Idaho Mule Deer unit 54

Actually, Squiggy's question is not only logical.. it's at least as 'realistic' than applying, drawing and then saying, "Hey, somebody who didn't draw.......show me how". Within the shadows, go quietly.

    Another Murder

Guys with badges shooting people who have done nothing wrong is not unusual...multiple times every year in the US. Speeding does not justify murder, which shooting someone who is not fighting in some manner most certainly is. Funny......the same 'officers' would do their best to arrest and...

    Poll ?

Obviously, this is an obscenity and the prosecutor (all involved) should spend at least 25 years in prison. The REAL TRAGEDY is that the vast majority of cases ARE NOT handled honorably....they are handled quickly in order to make things look good. DNA evidence has PROVEN ...... approximately...

    Unique Idaho Deer Hunt Success

He should have included the information that, if you use your (out-of-state) deer tag for a bear or lion......you can still get another deer tag. (Our deer population is still in the tank...but this IS a good idea.) Within the shadows, go quietly.

    Introduction and a couple questions

Would echo the recommendation of Eastman's books. "Our" hunting is far more challenging than TV or private-land hunting. Secrets: Do what Eastman's books say; learn to glass; physically work at this.....beware the terrain and our weather, they kill people every year; get away from other...

    My Personal View?

Agreed, Gazelle.....private land and guided is NOT the same; I'm not sure private is even close...guided is far more OK, when it's deep into the wilderness. The money is screwing things up......my (now 10) son may well have to be a millionaire in order to hunt by the time he's my age. WE need...

A question for you successful trophy hunters

It's true that you can't kill a big one where there are no big ones......but (depending on how big BIG IS) there are far more big deer than most are willing to admit, when they are not seeing them. Within the shadows, go quietly.
