In March we caught and collared around 40 deer from San Cristobal , Questa etc than over to Chama and TA. Biopsied tonsils testing for CWD. Maybe one of those?

Grew up in and still love SDak but I will stick to NM. Not sure what you mean about bird hunting, I hunted quail every week through February on huge tracts of public land, never saw another hunter and was in shirt sleeves.

I went through the same thing before my Arizona elk hunt in September, tried a bunch of new and improved bullets but the 300 grain barnes outshot them all. Terminal performance on a mature 8x7 herd bull at 197 yards was splendid, I used 84 grains by weight BH209. Congratulations on your success...

Actually my son has hunted with Jr. several times in very difficult conditions....sheep hunts in the Yukon and BC. Extreme elevation, weather and terrain, my son speaks very highly of the man, his toughness , ethics and ability to climb a mountain. I would be proud to hunt with him.

I was on the Caldera this weekend for the veterans cow hunt, very few animals seen. I knew 3 of the 20 had harvested as of Sunday and possibly a few more but the majority of the hunters I talked to had not seen much. The Park Service has closed most of the roads which makes access challenging...

last week all the major roads were open except vco9 which was closed for Jemez Pueblo ceremonies. a few of the smaller roads (vco501) were impassable but they talk about road conditions at the briefing so you will get more information. Good luck!

RE: Packing meat on horses LAST EDITED ON Sep-28-14 AT 06:46PM (MST)[p]i think it is much easier with the bone left in especially if you are packing on a decker pack saddle or a riding saddle. Here is how we sometimes pack the front of an elk rigging a basket hitch on a riding saddle.

RE: Packing meat on horses Just be careful, go slow and be patient. Pay attention to what the horse tells you, wrecks happen in the blink of an eye! This horse has packed over 50 bulls and I still treat each one like the first.

i agree on the last phase, they were screaming as early as labor day, the first couple weeks of September was nuts! seemed like a much earlier rut in the pecos and gila as compared to last year.

I am guessing rifle kill , private ranch in a unit outside the core elk units..38 etc?

Thanks but I wasnt the one that shot him. As far as antler growth goes there are 2 bulls as big or bigger on trail cams. Not a lot of elk in the area but as you can see there are some real pigs!
