What is the best gun for lions!

I agree with KevinD. .22 mag is a good choice if legal. But just about any .25 caliber or under is ok. My biggest issue is the gun itself. I have a Tompson Contender that I think is the perfect gun to carry. You can put it in your pack so it is not in the way going to the tree. My 16" barrel is...

Javelina mount for a successful huntress!

I would be very skeptical of a javelina mount for 400. If cost is the only deciding factor then of coarse that is a great deal. Remember, you have to look at that mount for years to come. Trying to save a few dollars on a mount usually ends up with something you'd be ashamed of showing anyone...

    SKULLS

Degreasing can take months for a bear skull, not hours. Water/dawn needs to be a constant 120 degrees and it will need to be changed two times a week. Every skull is different so the time it takes to fully degrease can only be determined by the amount of grease that is left in the water when it...

    reattaching antelope horns

The smell is coming from bacteria that is growing inside the horn core. Remove the horn sheaths. The skull portion should be degreased in a solution of dawn soap and water at 120 degrees for about two weeks. Changing the water several times. Before putting the skull in this degrease solution...

    Bear skull

EB, you can use a small amount of clear epoxy in the seam where the two pieces rest inside each other. You can keep it closed or prop it open while it dries. Just use a small amount. If you ever decide to change it later on, they can be popped apart without damaging it. Just use one small drop...

??? of the Day ... Taxidermy Turnaround Time

Here is a breakdown of the actual time it takes to mount something. Once the animal is dropped off, it's about a week to turn, flesh, salt and dry it. Another day to box it up and ship it to the tannery. Now this is where things can change. The actual tanning process doesnt take that long...

    new hound puppy

You're starting off on the wrong foot. Bloodhound/hound crosses have never been very successful. They've been tried many times. Training a pup without an older dog can be done but it takes dedication by the Houndsman. Most pups fail because of the guy behind the dog, not his pedigree. Go to...

    Velvet freeze dry help

Freeze drying is not something you can do in your freezer. It requires a 'freeze drying' machine. Finding one large enough to handle a large rack can be a challenge. One that large will cost between 6-10K. If you want a professional looking job, take the skull/rack to a good taxidermist that has...

LAST EDITED ON Aug-29-14 AT 05:35AM (MST)[p]LAST EDITED ON Aug-29-14 AT 05:19?AM (MST) Your reasoning for using a transporter instead of an outfitter is 100% backwards. I've been guiding out of Kotz for 18 years. We arrive around Aug 10 each year. The reason we arrive so early is to get our...

    Antlers mispostioned ?

6" is a lot. They should end up being around an inch from the wall. I've mounted several hundred elk in a similar position/form and they all end up about an inch or so from the wall, never 6". Have it fixed, you'll be happy with it.

    Antlers mispostioned ?

That picture doesn't look like the tips are near the wall. How far from the wall are they? They should be less then an inch. I think he's BSing you for poor workmanship. There's all kinds of ways to make antlers fit without tilting them forward so it isn't even close to be natural. Should I...

    Antlers mispostioned ?

I think you are right, they look too far forward. The tips should be almost touching the wall. It can be fixed but it will not be easy to do it right. The cape will have to be rehydrated so it is soft again. This will take a couple of days, then remove the stitching and any clay so you can get...

    Trophy Room Help

I built a new taxidermy shop last year and I used 3/4 ply on the walls then put Aspen T&G on top of that. I've got a huge bison and a couple of elk hanging on it right now along with a huge life-size lion. You won't have any problem with using 3/4". Be sure to post some pics when you get it done!
