I think the experience of Montana would be just as good with an October season. The big bucks are gone have been for some time, we have population issues now. There is an uprising with residents and I see some changes coming, hopefully for the better.

I agree with almost everything you’ve said but when nonresidents are shooting more bucks than residents in some of the regions, nonresidents have become a problem at that point.

I’m all for opportunity but once populations crash and we are effecting the herd health there needs to be a hard stop. Opportunity is going to dry up real quick if we continue on the same course. We may have been able to handle 21k plus nonresident tags in the past but we can’t anymore.

I’ve hunted deer out of state 4 times. Night and day difference on 3 out of the 4 hunts. Incredible to me Montana deer tags keep selling out and nonresidents are happy with the quality of hunt.

Thank goodness for the landowners that are doing the managing for the fwp. If it wasn’t for landowners that want a healthy deer herd there wouldn’t be anything left in eastern Montana. Sadly from my interactions with local fwp the counts look good and business as usual will continue.

I live in the area and this is pretty accurate of what I have been seeing. There may be a few pockets that hold more deer but overall the deer are gone. It’s as bad as I’ve ever seen it. Business as usual for mtfwp, still sold doe tags. Unfortunately I think it will continue to get worse.

I would love to have that tag again some amazing elk hunting. I’ve hunted it twice once with a buddy and once with myself. No corners were crossed and bulls were shot. I find it laughable to say you have to corner cross to kill a bull in 16.

Sounds like you don’t need 11 weeks of opportunity to be satisfied or a muzzleloader season to be added on. You should be able to be successful in a weekend or maybe even a morning of hunting.

Doe tags go to the draw first then if there are leftovers you can just buy them, up to 7 in fact. Mule deer really get hammered on public, we treat them like coyotes. Sad to see.
