It was the greatest hunt I have ever been on. My 13 year old daughter was so excited to go but she had been fighting blisters since the muzzle hunt. Which she had received from playing soccer. We loaded the horses up and headed in. When we got to where we were going hunt. We decided to split up so my brother and father went to a area together and my daughter and I watched a different area. My brother shot a bull within a half an hour of leaving us. We had a 3 point bull come through but he didnt offer her a good shot. So we spent most of the morning packing my brothers elk out. My daughter was very exited for him. But she wanted to get an elk very bad. So we made a plan for the evening which involved a little bit of a horse ride and a hike. She was up for it, we had the mole skin and the blister pads for her heels. We got to the ridge where we thought we wanted to hunt. But we had gone up the wrong drainage. As we were sitting there deciding what to do we saw 3 cows come out and start feeding, but nothing else. I told my daughter we needed to get to that other ridge, but I said it is up to you. We had pushed her pretty hard earlier in the morning getting my brothers elk out and the hike to the ridge we were on. So were sitting there deciding what to do and she asked me if we went over to that ridge if we would get an elk. I said there is no for sures but if I was hunting that is where I would go. Out of the blue she says dad lets go. I said are you sure she said yes. So we bandaged her feet up and headed off. As we approached the other ridge she said that wasnt very hard. When we got to the top we decided to split up a little bit so we could watch the whole drainage. My brother and dad had not been gone more than 30 seconds. When my dad came back up the ridge and said there are 2 bulls over here. My daughter was so excited. So we snuck down to where my brother was and got her all set up for the shot. He was 346 yards away feeding up hill. So we kept her calm until he turned broadside. He finally turned after about 5 minutes. I said there is your shot sweetie, she took a deep breath and pulled the trigger and the 300 Ultra Mag hit home. He ran 30 yards and down he went. She was so excited she yelled down the canyon Bull Down!!!! Hunting with your children is one of the neatest experiences you will ever have. I am a very proud father.
