151 Dead

Heres some 2004 sheep mortality info from the USFWS:

causes of death for sheep in Idaho in 2004 (the last year for which complete statistics are available):

Overall sheep deaths were reportedly due to:
?digestive problems: 1,600
?respiratory disease: 1,300
?birthing problems: 1,100
?miscellaneous health problems: 3,200
?predators (all combined): 12,100 *
?harsh weather: 600
?poisoning: 800

* Sheep deaths due to predators represented 55 percent of overall losses.

Predator depredation deaths included:
?coyotes: 7,100 sheep
?dogs: 1,400 sheep
?bears: 1,100 sheep
?mountain lions: 400 sheep
?wolves: 270 sheep

Looks like wolves ate all the sheep!

Heres some more facts worth a thunk:

Between 1995-2012 wool subsidies in Idaho totaled $10,213,685.

For reference, the Siddoway sheep company that just recently lost the sheep in Idaho to wolves (nearly all of which suffocated themselves), received $522,773 in wool subisidies, plus another $381,803 in sheep meat subisidies between 1995 and 2012.

Sweet. Now hopefully the other 160 something will hit the dirt before they have time to hurt the herds anymore. Keep up the great success wolve hunters.

Makes perfect sense to me, I don't like mutton either and would much rather have elk! ;-)

I sure hope somebody is enjoying their lamb with mint jelly...the tax payers are taking a bilking for it.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-06-13 AT 07:08PM (MST)[p]151 and the trappers are just getting started. The trapping season has been extended for the 2013/2014 season.
The remaining limit is more than 161. There is only a quota for wolves in certain areas.
http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/public/hunt/?getPage=121
Hopefully more than 160 will be killed before the end of the season.

Keep in mind the claim of 746 of wolves in Idaho is based on wolves the biologist know about. The real number of wolves in Idaho is much higher than that. There were 425 confirmed wolf deaths in 2012. In 2012 biologists estimated there were 693 wolves in Idaho.
http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/public/docs/wolves/reportAnnual12.pdf (see page 5 for the population estimates)

Keep in mind the 425 wolf deaths in 2012 are only the deaths the biologist know about. There were more than 746 wolves in Idaho at the end of 2011.

Does anyone know if the Idaho F&G has been publishing the age of the wolves killed in Idaho each year?

Brian, those people doing that fuzzy math.....do they also figure out the unemployment rates :)

I figured they must know they have more wolves because they sure issued a lot of tags this year.

Post some nice fuzzy pics of your nice fuzzy wolves guys!

The wolf is good business for both sides.

The only one doing the fuzzy math is you Aspen, Not only do the sheep herd owners get massive subsidies from taxpayers, they render many thousands of square miles and entire mountain ranges of public land unusable for native bighorn sheep.

it really doesn't matter, as they will just have bigger litters to make up for the difference in killed wolves. The problem will never get better. The only way it will ever get better is if they poisoned again, and IMO that will never happen again. That's how predators work, fewer of them, bigger litters. and they will just keep spreading..

Last I checked we have some bighorn sheep in the West. The sheep herders have their rights too.

Also, their litters can get bigger but only to a certain extent. The hunting of wolves will help.

oh no doubt any killed helps a little bit. But, just for an example, the county I live in we do not have wolves, yet, but coyotes are abundant. We have coyote calling contests here pretty much every other weekend all winter long and everyone here is a sportsman and always out shootin dogs. Every year, countless coyotes are killed. And still there is no shortage or difference in the population, in fact this year there are more than I can ever remember. Poison is the only real answer to predator problems, IMO of course. but yes, if there weren't people out killing them, Im sure it would be worse.

destertbonehunter,

Don't worry you will have some BIG coyotes to hunt soon enough. To many people drinking the pro wolf coolaid... Then you have guys like BuzzH sticking up for wolves, and by doing so he only confuses hunters. But, the up side, wolves sure are fun to watch hit the dirt!!! My prediction is; Hunters are going to be forced to kill off their local packs any way they can. Some areas poison could be the only option left.

You will have a hard time hunting coyotes within 100 miles of Salt Lake City, because so many people hunt and shoot them. Even if they increased their litters it doesn't matter.

I believe that a wolf has it's place in the wild. I don't like having even one of them in the US. But, I agree that they should have some.

However, when the F&G said they would delist at 150 breeding pairs and then allowed 1500....that was wrong and so I hope and believe the hunting will get them back in control.

I bet the wolves are starting to understand and fear man again....that is also a good benefit from hunting.

Yes Buzz, because the Wolves had NOTHING to do with them suffocating... oh wait yes they did..

Sheww... You sure know how to twist things to help your cause dont ya Buzz..

Idaho wolf management is changing. In the Idaho Panhandle an incentive has been added by http://foundationforwildlifemanagement.org/ these guys have found a way to make a difference.

Take a look at the harvest numbers in the Panhandle as compared to any other wolf management unit in the state.

This program has just recently gone state wide.

Funding for this is provided by sportsmen membership and corporate sponsors.

blindsquirrel1,

Just made a small donation....I hope it goes towards helping kill a wolf. I love the idea....capitalism at work!

Aspen we appreciate your help, and I guarantee that is what your money will do. The only thing we do is provide incentive to harvest wolves!!!

I love the heck out of my wool socks, and pants. Lamb even tastes good. So id rather Buzzy H and his wolves dissapear!

Clap clap for the 151 dead!

Yah, but without BuzzyH who would be the token moron of the forum?

Aspen,

It wasn't the F&G that said they would delist at 150 breeding pairs, that was the USFWS. Where the IDFG failed was in lacking the balls to use the 10J rule.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-11-13 AT 09:16AM (MST)[p]Aspen,

Thats pretty funny coming from someone who would say this:

However, when the F&G said they would delist at 150 breeding pairs and then allowed 1500....that was wrong and so I hope and believe the hunting will get them back in control.

WOW!...thats pretty impressive. No wonder you're so confused about the wolf issue.

Care to point out in the EIS where it said the "F&G" would delist at 150 breeding pairs?

Also, when you get done finding that "fact"...could you point out a population estimate that states we now have "1500 breeding pairs".

WOW!...just WOW!

I to would like to see the land maggots eliminated from public land, but the fact is wolves are killing machines.

From quick research on populations and Buzz's sheep kill data:
Wolves pop.=750 w/ 270 sheep kills = 0.36 kills/wolf
Mtn. Lion pop.=3,000 w/400 sheep kills = 0.13 kills/Mtn Lion
Black Bears pop.=20,000 w/ 1,100 sheep kills = 0.06 kills/B.Bear
And coyotes, probably over 50,000 in numbers would = 0.14 kills/

I would hate to see the deer, elk, and moose breakdown.
Bottom line I think wolves were a bad idea to introduce in a struggling wildlife population. If you want to see wolves go to Alaska or Canada where they belong. Or keep them well managed in the lower 48. Just my opion.

Bill

What Buzz don't want to tell ya is that the Sheep is a long way down the list of animals that the WOLF will kill first, The sheep are just fun kills, Just like it a opportunity kill on a hunting dog. They aren't out looking for dog meat to eat, they just happen to run into a dog so they kill them, not like the ELK and DEER which are hunted and killed for eating every day of the year.

Buzz, take it easy. I got the "terminology" mixed up but the bottomline is that the wolf was OVER OBJECTIVE FOR 11 YEARS before the feds took it off of the endangered list.

THEY ARE NOW 10 TIMES WHAT THE OBJECTIVE WAS AND YOU STILL WANT MORE WOLVES!

FOOOOOOOL!

BuzzyH, you sound like a nice guy, but you're a paid fool when it comes to the wolf issue. I'd suggest staying out of it.

THE FACT IS WE DON'T NEED WOLVES ANYMORE WITH 7 BILLION PREDATORS ON THE EARTH CALLED HUMANITY!!!!

You all are wasting your time with BuzzH and wolves.
wolves don't eat meat, wolves don't effect moose populations, livestock is evil, Global warming is the reason were missing 15,000 elk from the Greater Yellowstone herd and methane from cow farts is the global warming driver. He has all the incomplete and misguided statistics to back up his play.
Buzz is firmly seated in the retarded short bus when it comes to Wolf reintroduction. You will not get him to give up his seat.

BuzzH has been heavily involved pro wolf, with the Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery plans from the get go. He and his so called conservation organization, the National Wildlife Federation, whom is the parent organization for the state Wildlife Federations of which Buzz is heavily involved in, first with the MTWF and now the WYWF, are a spreading poison among the true sportsmen in the US.

Yes Buzz you are nothing but a wolf sympathizer and have a great hatred for all livestock grazing permittees west wide on our Forest Service and BLM land.

Feduptwo has you figured out also.

You WF zombies I guess have a say in conservation but when you place the wolf and other so called endangered species above everybody and everything, then you have a problem my friend.

Go back to work now Buzzy because the taxpayer is paying your salary and to think how you are screwing the average joe blow hunter and conservationist, on and off the job. You can fool some of the people part of the time, but you aren't fooling many of the posters on this site.

Funny thing that after reading just a post or two of his, I came to the conclusion that he is either married to a dog or has several scores of them running amuck in his Govt sponsored home. Animals above humans!

Wells said here.

I would take a sheep rancher over an agency biologist for wildlife ALL day. At least the sheep rancher is honest and uses and understands common sense!!!!! The G&F or F&G agency guy will lie to push the budget!!!

You guys sure do have a good grasp of the gov guys concerning the Canada's Transplanted wolves.

If I were a pro wolf activist/extremist with a government job. (SHOCK)
I sure wouldn't hang out on a big game hunting forum.

Dumb or what????

Buzz you aren't going to sell your wolf views to me. They can grow them elsewhere but they aren't needed I states like Idaho and Utah. There are enough hunters for game control already.
