LAST EDITED ON Feb-04-08 AT 08:34PM (MST)[p]I am considering an elk or deer hunt in 16E. Any thoughts or sharing of experiences with the area would be appreciated.

We deer hunted that area a couple of years ago and it was ok. Very low deer numbers, we killed a couple of decent bucks after walking our a$$ off. It is very easy to get away from other hunters which was a plus, most of the deer where around water. We saw one Monster Buck on the last day but he was not about to stick around. We saw several Elk and a few good bulls, If you need any further info let me know.

Thanks for the response. What about public access in that unit? It appears that there is alot of private land. Will they let you through to the BLM and state land?

Most landowners won't let you thru. But there is access to most of the state and BLM.

You need to check with the G&F to see what can be accessed, but a couple years ago you could access public land via the private ranches. There were a few mature bulls south of Dattle a ways on that highway moving back and forth from private to public. Saw several bulls with no pressure. Just had to wait them out...some days on public, others private. Best bull was probablly high 330's, most around 300". Had a few shot opportunities in 5 days. The private land had some clients on it that killed a whopper just off the fencline to us. Real decent hunt if you can do your access homework.
