Buckshot:
Penetration
An 180-gr. AccuBond traveling at 3,000 fps MV should penetrate between 16" - 18" depending on what material it hits. This is according to Nosler's tests, which use a special mix of gluey elastic-like sticky substance that simulates an animal's muscles and internal organs. This substance is much much tougher than gelatin, which AccuBonds regularly penetrate over 20" in!
Velocity & Energy
According to a Calculator on
www.Handloads.com , a 180-gr. AccuBond (in Utah at 4,500' above sea level) starting at 3,000 fps MV would be traveling 2,567 fps at 300 yards with a whopping 2,633 ft. lbs of energy! This basically means at 300 yards your round would have
about the same hammer-effect as a .308 Win at the muzzle. The BC of an 180-gr. AccuBond is ".509".
500 yard velocity would be 2,258 fps and the bullet's energy would still be fairly high at 2,258 ft. lbs.
FYI - The Calculator also says 3,000 fps MV of the AccuBond would still have 1,502 ft. lbs of retained energy at 790 yards! Note: Winchester's and Federal's 2005 Ammo Catalogs have similar figures to those of the Calculator.
