Saw this on another site. One freakin' small whitey. :)

The story:
"Scores 266. 37 points. This buck was shot last week at Camp Bullis which
is one of the training areas connected to Fort Sam Houston. Texas Parks
and Wildlife indicates that this appears to be the second largest deer
(point wise) in the state of Texas. It is the largest in the last 100
years. Everybody and their dog is out at Bullis looking at this buck. Three taxidermy have offered to mount it for free.

We have had game specialists stop to see the buck. They say this could be
the second largest score in Texas and maybe the largest in the last 100
years. The head when mounted could be worth about $25K from what we are
told. It scored 265 points in Boone & Crockett.

The buck was seen by helicopter in the area of gun stand #77.The pilot
radioed to operations and reported that a severely wounded buck (was
dragging his hind section) was observed and gave the coordinates.

Operations was notified and responded with a small search team. They found
the buck and verified it was severely injured (appeared to have a broken
back). The search team destroyed the animal. It weighed 118 lbs, had a 21
3/4 inside spread, and had 40 measurable points"

Awesome buck, I grew up within 45 min of Camp Bullis. Hard to believe that Camp Bullis grew one like that, hell, hard to believe any of them get that big for that matter.

This is a positive slant on the issue. Actually, the Texas parks and wildlife is saying that the buck was "illegally" killed because it was killed with a pocketknife and the guy who did the deed didn't have a hunting license. They are trying to get custody of the deer. The Feds however, may try and claim it as well since it was taken on a federal facility.

Let's see, do you think they would be challanging how the deer was killed if it was a spike or doe?????

The guys involved ended the suffering of an injured animal. I would have done the same thing. Presently, everyone involved has had to hire a lawyer.

I read about this while in Austin during thanksgiving. What a joke, these guys were not trying or attempting to poach or do anything unethical. They were putting down an animal suffering....... Allen Taylor......

TPW gets stupid like all the rest of the agencies can. They ought to use a bit of common sense.

Anyway for many years I shot on post 2 times a month minimum. And knew lots of guys that were on post every day. We saw some really nice deer(150 class) but never anything like that. And to think the common Joe coulda shot that deer if on stand at Bullis at the right time..... Fort Hood may well be a sleeper too.

I'm more interested in shooting a few Axis off Bullis but have not seen what it would take lately.

GAACK!!!!!!!! Oh my lord that is awesome! I hope the finders of the buck get to keep him. Damn govt agencies, they always mess these things up. ...only for the big ones of course.

One of the interesting things about this is that part of the controversy is the fact that the guy killed it with a knife. The animal was supposedly down in the back so no big deal but I did a quick scan through the Texas Dept of Wildlife regs. and I did not see where it was actually stated that it is unlawful to take a deer with a knife!
So, I say, what the hell? Anyway, that deer had a lot of bone and if you know anything about the deer from around there you can understand why it is such an oddity.

One of the oddities to our state law is that it can be considered illegal if its not mentioned as legal. Its mostly a judgement call from the wardens I know.

Such as hunting deer with flint arrowheads. They have to meet a certain size and "blades" (however its stated) but never says steel. I've heard of folks being harrassed for good flint heads(which can be awful sharp if done correctly)

Then there was that issue about the guy killing a bear somewhere up north with a spear. Not listed either way BUT.......

And one in town here where they wanted to get a juvenile for shooting squirrels with a pellet gun. Everything was legal except for the fact that pellet guns are not legal for game animals(at least they aren't listed)(Total hearsay on my part since I never did the research to verify all of this paragraph)
